2. America still a racist country?
Well, maybe not racist as much as it is ignorant.
This is a country who voted "W" back in for a 2nd term even though Americans had clear evidence that this Administration lied and was totally incompetent in foreign and domestic affairs.
Yah, they'd rather vote for an old white guy, than some young, smart, black man.

3. Michelle is being hit with a double wammy.
Racism and Sexism. White Americans either don't like her because she is black or it's because she is a strong, intelligent and accomplished woman or both. It's hurtful and totally uncalled for.

What's bad is that black leaders like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton along with Women's Rights activists who rallied around Senator Clinton when she was being attacked by sexism are deafeningly silent about this. Their indifference toward this issue is disgraceful.

4. You're right
You are right on the mark. Many PUMA types who run around screaming "SEXISM" about HRC's treatment in the media (and they're right, by the way) are amazingly silent about Michelle's treatment. Some of them even pile on (various responses regarding "Whitey Tape" and "Baby Daddy" on PUMA sites confirm that).

This is not new; there has been a fault line between women of color and white feminists for a while.

14. He has to continue to go on the offensive with these people if he wants
to win big. His best chance of winning, is to continue to expose the Republican fraud, corruption, deceit, etc. Expose their terrible culture for what it is and make the American people ashamed that they ever trusted Republicans. period. If he even pauses for a minute to hand them a laurel leaf, they will use it to tweak out ground for themselves using the most inane, bigoted and convoluted reasoning.

And, yes, he's going to need Jackson, Sharpton, Women's Rights groups and everything in between to get him over, which is why he needs to decide now where his most loyal supporters are going to come from. He needs to really think hard on this one.

6. yes he was wrong. and i agree on the reason. i have spent a lot of time in thought of just this
i grew up in calif. i too was not around racism. living in panhandle of texas i see it. like he is now seeing it, that is how i came to see it too, only a while ago.

i have been thinking a lot of this. that is why the cover of ny was so bad. those living outside these areas saw satire and not a big deal, further showing people the wrong, how stupid. surely people arent that stupid.

living in this area, .... yes they are that stupid. how one continues to be racist

the ONLY thing that might of helped with the cover is the massive coverage about how stupid if people believed. if it had not gotten that coverage i guarentee people in this area would see it as proof obama a extreme muslim, love of osama, hates america, hand to terrorist, wife a black panther.....

8. Choices
I have also seen these racists. If given the choice between being unemployed, hungry, sick, with a white President, or having a job, having health care, and having a non-white President, most of them are going to vote for misery over their own self-interest.

10. Because they are not white!!!!
And even worse, they are Black!!!! I grew up among racist and I have known racist all my life. They are everywhere, and don't think they are not. I lived in NYC and believe me, there are plenty of racist there. There are members of ethnic groups that may/may not be considered white that are racist and I can almost guarantee that they will not vote for Obama because of his skin color.

But I will talk about the racist that are here in rural USA. They could care less how good Obama is, they will never consider him because of his skin color. Now most of these people are republican, but some democrats are like this also. Especially older people. One question raised is why would Michelle's ratings be lower than Barack's. My response would be 1) She has been attacked by the right even more than her husband 2) women are almost never respected as much as men are and 3)she is too outspoken for many who hold on to the idea that women should know their place. They feel that women should be concerned with her house and her children, politics/government is a mans world/concern.

This may have nothing to do with Michelle's low rating, but I will share it anyway. My ex was not white, he was Dominican with a multi-racial heritage, and was treated in our almost all white area the same as an African American would have been. Now to some racist he was "one of the good ones" while to others he was a "N". But I was usually seen the same by all of these people and they did and said things to me that they would never do or say to him. When I spoke to other white women (in other such areas) that were married to Black men we came to one conclusion. To these people there was only one thing worse than a Black man, and that was the (white) woman married to him. We considered the extra hatred toward us was based on the fact we were white and they considered us traitors to "our kind". But what do I know, it may be the same for any woman.

16. WOW! Spot on!
Everything you said is precisely dead on! Everything!

Just to add a comment in reference to your 2nd para about women, you threaded the needle because women, especially in the rural, are expected to have a more homely focus rather than political...and so Michelle's outspokeness would get resentment not just from men (sadly there are many) but many women....and we all know there is stereotype of an outspoken black woman...ouch! The only way for Michelle's numbers to go up has long past...her only way was to never speak and sit in a chair like a porcellin doll and would be handy to set up an appointment to get the skin bleached.

Thanks for your brilliant analysis!

11. No surprise.
After eight years of the idiot and all the horrendous scandals of so many other Republicans in Congress, I thought that America was finally able to get past the sexism and racism. But the poor decisions and terrible missteps made by the Obamas and Clintons (and others) and the unscrupulous media players amplifying, misconstruing, decontextualizing and just outright lying, there was new doubt about the electibilty of the Democratic nominees.

I have personally witnessed people letting their racism slip (then trying to cover it up) and displaying pride in their misogyny (no need to cover up that) regularly. With "events" like the "terrorist fist bump", Reverend Wright, Bill Clinton's "fairy tale" and the interminable misrepresentations by the media, the door is now open for a "believable" upset by the "war hero", and it seems to be based mostly on the racism and sexism which is alive and sickeningly vibrant in this country.

I am bitterly frustrated with the state of this country. Michelle Obama might have recently become "really" proud of this country, but I never have been and doubt that I ever will be.

15. I give credit to Whites here and there for openly seeing such ignorance still exists
Yup the ugliness of society still exists...all you need is just reword the questioning to see the truth. It is clear those polled were voting based on color. But lets be clear, it is very much about ignorance.

When Obama is elected president and performs well in the position those narrow views held by those Low-information voters will change....hopefully. But then, there is the stubborn thing where society will jsut dissociate that particular individual from the group while still perpetuating the negatives of that group.
