8. If this man is not elected president
this country will deserve to go down the tubes.

After voting bush in for two terms, if they go again for the candidate that makes stupid cracks instead of talking to us like we are adults, then they deserve what they get. I will just feel sorry for the rest of us.

10. Legalize drugs defund terrorism and gain with a sales tax. Empty prisons...
Edited on Sun Jul-20-08 08:22 PM by barack the house
Legal drugs will be safer cheaper leading to less crime and emptier prisons. No more war just sensible laws. For the meantime though till this sense raches consensus we are stuck with afghanistan.

Pete Tosh "legalize it and I will advertize it"

11. I feel as though I'm residing in a parallel universe.
After nearly eight years of idiocy spewing from the White House and the mouths of Republicans it's strange, though pleasantly so, to hear someone speak with intelligence, authority, and understanding. WTF has been wrong with this country?

12. I don't know....I'm I the only one who doesn't like the idea of staying in Afghanistan?
...Obama's talk about staying, rebuilding, and adding troops, makes me fell like we're going to continue fighting a war in the Middle East.

Will Obama use Halliburton, the way Clinton did? I don't want the same,-only different.

25. Yeah but this wouldn't be the same thing
The task is more daunting than politicians etc let on, but the first time around the Soviets were facing a country that wasn't ravaged by decades of war with Superpowers, and they also had to fight a massive CIA covert war. We could secure Afghanistan, but we actually need a mission and a plan to turn it over and get out, unlike in Iraq where we have nothing but an open ended commitment and grandiose plans of our own Arab proxy state in the region. In Afghanistan, we have to avoid that at all costs.

Let's be a little more realistic here.

20. I had that feeling, too. But we have to repair the mess before we
can leave Afghanistan. By helping the Afghanistan government to sustain their country so that the fundamentalist Tali ban can not maintain a foot hold will require a strong middle class and a strong sense of power by the common people of Afghanistan.

That is why we need the best minds and strongest of hearts to help respect, and not replace or overtake the afghan culture and society.

We have the support, there, of the UN which, to my knowledge, does not outsource it's responsibilities.

26. I spoke only of Afghanistan , but both are messes that we in-
flamed.

If we are talking about Iraq, then I would say to draw down our forces immediately and see if we could enlist the UN peace keepers to help resettle and reinstate an honest Iraqi government. We need to enforce international laws on the American contractors who are the corruptive forces in that part of the world.

Iraq is not our business and has never been our right to invade!

22. Well, unfortunately we really have no choice thanks to Bush...
Edited on Tue Jul-22-08 06:02 PM by ALiberalSailor
...if they hadn't "taken their eye off the ball", Afghanistan would be a very, very different place right now. As it stands, it's blowing up in our face and it's imperative we do something about it now, and get the rest of the world involved as well. The only way to get NATO to send more troops to help out would be to commit more of ours. As someone who will be there this time next year, I'm not ecstatic about it, but it needs to be done. The real unfortunate thing about all this, from my perspective, is that the first half of Obama's first 4 years will be spent addressing Bushes fuck ups.

23. The key there is to finish a certain mission
Go on the offensive with the remnants of the Taliban, secure certain regions and then step back. It's much more plausible than our insane plan in Iraq. I say we avoid privatizing the Afghan economy, avoid building permanent U.S. bases, and after about a year and a half, turn everything over to NATO and pull U.S. troops out. The country should be fairly stable and peacekeeping troops should be able to keep the regions in solid shape, while doing things like providing safety and quelling the drug trade.

But yes, you should be concerned about another open ended conflict. This isn't like the Soviets in the 80s though. Afghanistan is much more war torn now, the Taliban has no Air Force or anything like that, nor do they have the preeminent world Superpower providing them with weapons and aid on a massive scale. But once again, we need to define just exactly what our mission is there, something that we don't really have in Iraq because the goalposts are always changing.

Presidential candidate Obama would be wise to set a mission and and a goal for ending the conflict in Afghanistan too, otherwise President Obama might paint himself into the same type of corner that McCain and Bush are with regards to Iraq. Also, Obama has to be wary of trading one disastrous open ended war for another. The American public won't stand for that for long. He not only needs to figure out how to end Iraq, but end Afghanistan too.

Obama and McCain, robots advancing the agenda through parallel means. I hope Obama informs the troops on their next deployment to PROTECT the poppy fields and further spending for the military...ahem...america from the "terrists".

WAKE UP, PEOPLE!

Obama uses crucial foreign tour to promise more troops for Afghanistan:

24. Yeah it's nice to see that
I like Bob Schieffer but that guy is an airhead half the time. I heard McCain blatantly lie to him a few weeks before the '04 election and Scheef never challenged him, so ever since then I've not been too keen on Bob's knowledge of affairs. At least here we get to listen to two people who are having an intelligent discussion. Most of the time these interviews are less informative than say, my brother and I sitting around talking about politics.
