McCain Falsely Claims The Surge ‘Began The Anbar Awakening,’ But CBS Doesn’t Air It
from Think Progress by Ben

During an interview with Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), CBS Evening News host Katie Couric noted that Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) said recently that “there might have been improved security even without the surge” and asked McCain, “What’s your response to that?”

McCain called Obama’s claim “a false depiction of what actually happened” but McCain then falsely claimed that the surge “began before the Anbar awakening“:

McCAIN: I don’t know how you respond to something that is as– such a false depiction of what actually happened. Colonel McFarland was contacted by one of the major Sunni sheiks. Because of the surge we were able to go out and protect that sheik and others. And it began the Anbar awakening. I mean, that’s just a matter of history.

But in a puzzling move, the CBS Evening News did not actually televise McCain’s false claim tonight. As MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann reported, “CBS curiously, to say the least, left it on the edit room floor. It aired Katie Couric’s question, but in response, it inserted part of McCain’s answer to another question instead.” (See the full transcript here.)

CNN’s Anderson Cooper obtained the CBS clip and aired it tonight. Watch it:

In fact, the Sunni revolt against Al-Qaida in Iraq’s Anbar province — commonly referred to as “The Awakening” — “began” long before Bush even announced his “surge” policy in January 2007. As the New York Times noted in April 2007:

The turnabout began last September <2006>, when a federation of tribes in the Ramadi area came together as the Anbar Salvation Council to oppose the fundamentalist militants of Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia.

But also, President Bush himself noted this fact in a speech to the Naval War College in June, 2007:

Last September <2006>, Anbar was all over the news. It was held up as an example of America’s failure in Iraq. The papers cited a leaked intelligence report that was pessimistic about our prospects there. <…>

About the same time some folks were writing off Anbar, our troops were methodically clearing Anbar’s capital city of Ramadi of terrorists, and winning the trust of the local population. In parallel with these efforts, a group of tribal sheiks launched a movement called “The Awakening” — and began cooperating with American and Iraqi forces.

Spencer Ackerman notes that the colonel McCain cited is “now a one-star general” and had explained the “Awakening” to a reporter in September 2006 “before it even had a name.” “For McCain to say that the Anbar Awakening is the product of the surge is either a lie or professional malpractice,” added Ackerman.

4. How ironic.
The day the McSame camp complained so bitterly about the media not giving him enough air time, the media proves him right by editing down his interview--to enhance his image competency.

20. They ARE paying close attention to McStain.
They're being very careful not to publish anything that might hurt his widdle chances to be the next brush cutter. That's why he isn't getting much coverage - there is very little tape of him where he isn't making an ass out of himself.

9. Shhhhh.... don't tell the Republicans....
Wait until after their convention crowning McLame their nominee and the flipster his VP. THEN well spring the big surprise on them: Obama and his ability to speak coherently and with a competent and nuanced understanding of domestic and international affairs and national security. And check it out he'll do it without totally screwing up the facts either by mistake he refuses to rectify, or "accidentally on purpose," like McLame's latest "gaffe."

15. So Bin Laden dictates where we fight?
I guess OBL is in charge of McCsame's foreign policy, that is McCains reason that Iraq is the central front because Bin Laden says so.

16. What the hell?
If Obama ever did something this stupid (which he won't) can you imagine how it would be blown up?
Why is CBS afraid to show McCain's increasing senility?
I used to think years ago that this guy wasn't so terrible, and then he sold his soul, and has been sliding downhill ever since.

26. Ain't that the truth ...
had Obama blew some nonsensical crape like that it would be the complete and total deathknell for his campaign ...

I agree, I WANTED, after 8 (incluiding BEFORE the idiot got elected, cause I knew he was THAT bad even before) of hating the ever loving crape out of the Disaster in Chief, I WANTED to think that McCain was not that bad ... I could get past his selling out like he did, to the bushies, the religious right ... ect ... I also knew that McCain's faculties were fading due to age before the campaign got hot, but the more it has drug on, the stress has just has led to him totally decompressing ...

He is falling apart, and his campaign, especially in comparison to Obama's, is a joke ...

As sommeone else noted, in the LONG tradition of Rs nominating mentally deranged and incompetent candidates ... Nixon, Reagen, Bush II ...

17. Can you say "alzheimers"?
This kind of "mis-remembering" is happening again and again. Reminds me of my mother when she first started showing signs of having alzheimers/dementia.

Everything gets all mixed up together on the old hard drive and OOPS, there you go, another whopper pops out.

19. He is imune to media scrutiny.
McCain can make faux pas after faux pas and nothing is said. The media edits his answers for him to make him seem coherent. He said Sunni's and Shia's did not have a history of violence toward one another before the Iraq war.....oh wait there was a history. Then he didnt know the difference between them. He admits he knows little about economics, nothing.. the media portrays that as honesty. Why would we want another underacheiving scatterbrain dumbass as president? Its not an attack on him to say he has senior moments if he in fact does. Also he is considered a senior citizen so arent all his moments senior moments? Also, have you ever been behind a septugenarian in traffic or at a restaurant or anywhere for that matter, do we want one leading our country? Now, i love old people, they gave us the country we had in the 90s they made possible what no one else could. they defeated the Nazis, the Russians but its the next generations turn now. If someone can remember WW2 they may be considered old, im just saying.

22. How did cnn get a hold of this video
if cbs wouldn't show it?

A buzzflash contributor is asking if katie couric should be fired over this obvious journalistic manipulation..

"Does Katie Couric deserve to be fired for substituting a John McCain answer?"

Karma's a Bitch, katie.

24. I spent much of my career as a geriatric nurse.
MeCain's performance today made me cringe in recognition. What he was displaying was "confabulation," an early symptom of senile dementia. People who have holes in their memory make things up to fill in the blanks. It's not exactly lying, as they have no idea that what they're saying isn't true, but it certainly isn't reliable.

Cindy needs to look into a nice retirement home for him, with understanding help.
