1. I don't have anything against hunting per se,
but hunting this is NOT. It's just plain vicious and cruel. Anyone who supports shooting animals from a plane in this manner is a heartless neanderthal.

She's shaping up to be the perfect Cheney to McCain's Shrub...

29. The real problem is WHY they do this.
If they were shooting animals from planes like this because they injured humans or even if they used them for food it would seem more acceptable in the sense that every day you and I eat beef or chicken that's seen some horrible life and death.

The WHY behind all of this is not because the meat is used for anything. They just want to up the population of carabou and other game animals so the hunters that fly to alaska to do some hunting can have plenty to kill.

It's killing off their natural predators so that there are more of them and thus you can host more tourist hunters every year.

Once again, Alaska first. At all costs.

30. Or rather, Alaska money whores first, at all costs
wolves strengthen the species; they take out the sick and the weak (and most wolves primarily exist on mice,as the researcher in "Never cry wolf" discovered). "Sport" killers take out the strong "trophy" animals. It's a prescription for disaster and it actually puts Alaska LAST.

2. Absolute insanity.
There are some truly sick people in this world. Those two in the plane are prime examples. What a terrible sadness they heap upon us. Yet it wouldn't surprise me that on any average day people think of them as normal, likable guys. All I could say to them is what cowardice they show.

did you know that a wolf crossed with any species of domestic dog is called a "wolfdog" because wolves ARE dogs. They are not a separate species. Domestic dogs are nothing more than modified wolves-so they ARE shooting dogs from a plane!

5. My own fucking father defended her for this bullshit over the weekend.
Edited on Tue Sep-02-08 08:46 AM by EnviroBat
He was going on about what a tough, bright woman she was. How she hunts game, and governs Alaska so wonderfully. She refuses federal money, blah blah, talking point, talking point. Sadly, as I write this, I've decided that the next time I see my father, he will be lying in a casket. In an effort to reconnect with him, I took him to the Cleveland Air Show on Labor Day. I no longer know the man, and he is a complete stranger. The only things we have in common are our memories from a time when we were both younger, and liked science and technology. Things that were "cool" were all we cared about. We're older now and we have very different ideas about the country and government. He is a right-wing lunatic, and despises Obama with the same contempt I hold for McCain. He makes absolutely no sense, and his ideas of the future are obtuse at best. He firmly believes that World War III is coming and there's nothing we can do to avoid it. It has been foretold in the scriptures, and what we are seeing now is the beginning of the end. These predictions are coming from the same man who told me, when I was 7 years old, that someday we would all have a box in our house hat you could ask any questions and get the answers. I guess he was talking about the advent of the personal computer. He was right. That day has arrived. He also says that Limbaugh "knows his shit". My father, once a genius who held a position with NASA, has become a mumbling retard. I used to love the man, but now I am lost.

I fucking hate John McCain, and anyone who you advocate the hunting of animals in such an inhumane way, Sara Palin included. Stupid fucking whore.

This is very hard for me. i think it's one of the most difficult things in life to suddenly realize that you don't know a person who you once thought you knew. To say goodbye to them and wish them luck on their journey.

I wish it were different for you and your father. I don't know your age or the age difference between you and your he, but this has got to be painful. I guess you just have to take it one day at a time.

Intelligence has very little to do with evolution of the other human qualities.

If you DO become a model for him to OBSERVE these evolutionary qualities (presenting facts, best read in a Thom Hartmann book)... maybe, just maybe (before he's on his deathbed) he'll want to talk again. I hope you're not going to look for him to say he was wrong, because sometimes that's the hardest thing to say, or forgive the other for.

Good luck with being THE model.

I don't think he want's to observe me as a model. It occurred to me that all of my life, I've made all the effort to see him and stay involved with him. I guess this weekend was a real eye-opener for me, and a sad realization. I've made all this effort to maintain a relationship with a person who doesn't have much in common with me anymore. I just don't know if I want to see him anymore. I feel very tired...
Thanks for your kind words.

But when your father exposes himself as a bigot and a racist. Believes that anyone who supports Obama is a terrorist sympathizer, and a traitor Welcomes the end of the world with open arms because he's lost his ability to think for himself. Has been brow-beaten into submission by a completely dysfunctional, drug addicted family which he married into by choice, only to virtually ignore his real children left behind. Voting McCain is the icing on the fuck-you cake. Hope you never have to understand.

27. Hrmm
I typically don't respond to non-political items but this one reminded me of myself.

Can you have a discussion with the man where he doesn't force politics into it? I've read your responses to other messages on this thread and you certain are full of contempt for your Dad.

I had a father that was a right winger and voted on Gun Control alone. Felt that the Dems were going to catalog each and every gun owner and come take their guns away. Yeah total lunatic talk.

I dis-owned him for a while and then welcomed him back into my life under the agreement we wouldn't ever talk politics. I'm glad I did as he died 3 or 4 years later very suddenly.

Long story short. You're angry right now but keep an open mind when you calm down a bit. If you're like many Men, myself included, somewhere in your 40's you'll start looking back on your life and will have a lot of "what if's" to think about. Don't need to add this to the list.

34. You may be right.
It's hard to "hang out" with him anymore. He's become more like this person, friend, acquaintance, than a father. I know that deep down, he feels very sad about never getting to know my sister and I, and there's this whole "too late" cloud hanging over all of us. I love talking about the old days with him, but something seems to steer the conversation into the political arena. I guess what makes me the most angry, is I give myself away, and don't take a hard defensive position when he's ranting on. I actually "pretend" to agree with him to avoid hard feelings. I hate it. I want him to know who I am before he dies. What I stand for. The "what if's" are hard brother, no doubt about it...

My father and grandfather both researched and contributed to advancements in radar and radio transmission technologies, electronics, alternative fuel technologies, the men were brilliant. But to see my dad now, he looks like a broken-down old, disenchanted man. How could have turned out so narrow minded?

7. From the usual response here to topics on huntin' 'n guns, most DUers will not be critical of this
slaughter.

After all, they are "only" animals and exist to serve us in whatever way we determine.

OP - "my" party has gone around the bend to embrace the disgusting "values" of the enemy. But, as long as they win, everything is okay.

12. here's what I don't like about it
In the end the damning photo is of her with a caribou. Who knows if she shot a caribou from an airplane but that's is what's implied. Why not show a quote of her in supporting shooting of wolves from an airplane or something. I don't think they thought this out. I am a hunter and this video seems to damn all hunters not just the ones who kill animals with a totally unfair advantage which of course I'm against.

In the comments from that link, there is another link to the video in it's entirity. Apparently they kill the wolves (and bears) so that there can be more caribou and moose for the hunters.

Palin supported a ballot initiative making airplane hunting legal.

Sorry if the video was unclear.

Just for the record,I don't think all hunters are bad.

This airplane hunting, though,is horrendous.

14. Speaking as a hunter.
I find this kind of hunting to be completely pussy .

These are no more hunters than schoolyard bullies are scholars. She is definitely from the "little" Dick Cheney school of hunting. They wouldn't even be able to make a kill if they didn't have all their toys and electronics and trucks and planes and beer .

When Cheney shot that guy in the face I was working at a maximum security prison
and the consensus among the guards was that Cheney should be arrested, have his guns taken away from him, and that he was a putz. You NEVER pull the trigger unless you KNOW where that bullet is going. My guess on Cheney is that the reason he was kept isolated for 24 hours was that he needed to sober up and get the drugs out of his system.

Palin, probably just drunk. Like when she got knocked up as a teenager. Like when she got married at the barrel of a gun to keep her dad from beating the shit out of her. And like her daughter was when she was out boinking.

I am disgusted with the choice for VP and at the same time delighted.

17. Eight years in Alaska. Not once did I meet an Alaskan who supported aerial hunting
I don't think I ever met one that supported killing wolves at all.

Most Alaskan hunters hunt for food. There are, inm y personal experience, very few "trophy hunters" endemic to the state. Things like this video aren't hunting, but are instead wolf kills - they fly out and slaughter wolves so that out of state trophy hunters don't think the wolves are killing the impressive moose or caribou. When I left the state, back in '06, they were talking about hiring private hunters to kill the wolves, rather than Fish and Game employees.

What you're looking at is a Governor defying the wishes of her state in order to cater to out-of-state big money groups.

18. Bumping for great justice
This is a killer for her, guys. On the political level, this is a practice Alaskan citizens have voted against three times, that continues anyway. It is done against the wishes of her state in order to appease out of state interests. She's a sellout.

Second, anyone with a mild grasp of ecology will realize how absolutely unsound the practice is, much less the reasons given for it. Wolves don't kill "trophy" animals. They kill the slower, weaker, sicker animals. In other words, wolf predation increases "trophy" quality. Palin is clueless.

Lastly? Even the most absolute batshit barking crazyman right-winger loves his dog. They will defend this woman's horrible political positions to the ends of the earth - but they will not, WILL NOT defend the image of a wolf bleeding and rolling around in clear agony while being shot at from a plane. Get this footage out.

Its not like theres an over population problem with them disrupting neighborhoods. This is just cruel, but I have noticed that alot if not most Bible thumpers have no regard for animal life. If the wolves were going into neighborhoods and attacking people I could see getting rid of some but this is Alaska, it is the most sparsley populated state and it is 47th is total population. This was done by cruel people that should never be acknowledged or given a chance to speak, they should be shunned into extinction.
