MEDIA ADVISORY September, 4, 2008
For Immediate Release: Contingent of Lawyers, Activists, and Media Take Concerns of Police Brutality at RNC to Mayor Coleman's Office

Contact: Kris Hermes 510-681-6361
- WHAT: Attempt to meet with Mayor Chris Coleman about escalation of police brutality in St. Paul
- WHO: Lawyers, activists, and members of the media - WHEN: September 4, 2008 @ 4:00 p.m.
- WHERE: St. Paul Mayor’s Office, 15 W. Kellogg Blvd. Police violence has not been limited to the streets. The Coldsnap Legal Collective, providing support to people arrested at the RNC, has received numerous reports of abuse in the jails. In addition to widespread denial of medical attention, multiple people have been brutalized by Sheriff’s Deputies inside their cells.

At a press conference earlier today, recently released activist Elliot Hughes made statements that while in jail he had a bag placed over his head, a gag in his mouth, and was beaten to unconsciousness by multiple correctional officers.

1. thanks for posting this
I saw the live feed but I couldn't locate it later when I wanted to share it. Also, thanks for the contact info. These lawyers are doing very important work and deserve support and recognition.

2. End the Police State!
Imagine, We the People, taking turns to serve as the police and jailers. End privatized jails. End law enforcement as a career. We do not need a militia to be above us. We can all serve a duty to our communities as the police and jailers. There would be rules we would have to abide with, like not placing a bag over a young mans head, or never beating the unholy S#it out of anyone, but community policing will be much better than the atrocity inflicted upon our fellow citizens during the Republican convention.

3. It Is Wrong To Blame The Mayor
For the actions of the Sheriff. This Sheriff is out to make a name for himself so he can run for higher office. The Sheriff and his officers were being cheered by the RNC delegates each time they busted heads. This was political grandstanding with a consequence. Hold the Sheriff accountable. The other rogue officers could not be identified because their uniforms were stripped of their jurisdiction. Nobody knew who they were so of course some will be brutal when they know they can get away with it. To the extent that St. Paul police were involved the Mayor should be held accountable but none of the stories I read identified the rogue officers as St. Paul police. Overall security, I believe, was being handled by the Secret Service and that lays it in the lap of John McCain.

5. the SS
the SS & HLS seem to have bullied/order EVERY other law enforcement branch involved with the convention. The Mayor probably had very little choice in the matter.. but a conciencious person might want to speak out about that.

4. Is anyone else having problems viewing films this week?
Things have been very slow and have only seen half of this one in an hour time period (I've tried a new computer and an old one and same speed). I don't know about all of you but this crap going on with the police state is incomprehensible! If this next election gets stolen again they better have a lot more people trained because I think all of us will hit the streets (and I'm 50!) and good luck controlling us. To bad they have all the national guard in Iraq. We just can't take this anymore!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
