1. Fox News and the "Only in America" meme
Edited on Tue Sep-09-08 06:54 AM by ExPatLeftist
I liked the interview, I think Obama did very well.

I do not think that he or any Democrat, however, should ever go on Fox News. It is a right-wing propaganda channel that is one of the best examples of Orwellianism that we have today with its "fair and balanced" tripe. I think that all Democrats should agree to never go on that channel, and then when only the right wing pundits are left, then maybe people will see the channel for what it is.

The other problem I have, which Obama, along with nearly every politician in America, parrots often, is the "Only in America" line about anyone that has ever gone from rags to riches, that that can somehow only happen in America. BULLSHIT. It happens all over the world. Making statements like that appeal only to divisive nationalism, and also show a great ignorance of the rest of the world - an ignorance that Americans in general are already more than famous for. Also, it promotes even further ignorance, because people will hear an authority figure stating what is a lie and accept it as truth.

Social mobility in the US is no more likely than most anywhere else - and less likely than in many places. The "Only in America" meme is quite simply an introverted jingoistic lie. I think Barack Obama is a great candidate and I admire him deeply, and he probably has to say bullshit like this to get elected. But the US is infected with divisiveness from the rest of the world and the arrogance to constantly claim to be "the greatest nation" as if comparison of nations is somehow necessary. This is a huge issue in the American collective mindset which needs to be resolved if the US wants to join the rest of the world.

16. Whatever
RW viewers probably had a boner the entire time just loving Bill beating up on him.

You do realize these are the same people who through Bush won the 2004 debates. They don't see things the way the rest of the world does. If they did they'd be Dems.

4. Haha, no, but we do get Fox News... :S
In much of Europe, Iceland included, the US system seems to most to be a battle between 2 far-right parties...

8. two right wing factions of a single millitary/corporate system,..
yup,. that is what the people here have been lead to belive is democracy, two right wing factions of a single millitary/corporate system, that work for elite interestes are the only 'choices' offered,. somehow, Americans have been mind-funked into beliving this minimal choice to be some how a democratic sytem of govenance,. . tis' truly sad to behold, especially, having to live here in it!

5. How do people stand to watch that idiot?
All Billo does is yell to try and make his point. I seriously think the man is incapable of having a rational conversation without raising his voice.

I hate O'Reily, blah blah blah right-wing scumbag blah blah blah. I thought Obama was great. He gave specifics, he didn't allow this nazi to roll all over him.

10. Oh for fucks sake...
Can this bellowing moron O'Reilly have a meaningful dialog with anyone? Is he even fucking capable? All the fucker does is interrupt, and attempt to shout over the entire fucking interview like a typical republican, smarmy fuck. This shit is completely unwatchable. Once again, the whole republican argument comes down to "Fuck you, I've got mine..." It's sad that Obama had to endure this fucking idiot.

13. By sitting down with O'Reilly Obama has shown he can work with anyone
Looking for points of common ground and trying to get to a rational discussion and decision.

Huge plus, though subtle. Underpins his entire campaign message.

15. What's dumb is
The rightwingers will eat this up. All he did was feed the rightwing base and O'Reilly's ratings.

These are the same people who thought Bush won the debates with Kerry in 2004. They don't view things normally and most of them probably had a boner the entire time.

Meanwhile Palin and McCain won't even go on Larry King Live where Larry King doesn't mistreat his guests.

17. Gah!!!
LET THE MAN SPEAK, PLEASE!!! :grr:

I was told by a right-winger today that Obama is "notoriously slippery" and that is why O'Reilly had to get loud and cut him off mid-sentence.

Excuse me, but no, Obama is not being "glib" or "slippery" by giving a nuanced and COMPLETE ANSWER! WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE?

20. Everytime I watch O'reilly I get very mad
More mad then I watch anyone else. Increased revenue doesn't mean shit as opposed to job losses. Job losses are very real and they are out there, I have personally seen it first hand. No one likes taxes as do I so Dems are virtually cast as tax hikers but him claiming class welfare, he is obviously a republican. Obama did well but to his loyal following, loud is right and O'reilly was clearly the louder one but Obama stood his ground. No one should ever dignify this asshole by ever coming on his show again.
