I hope we'll be able to look back on this time and have a good long laugh, like one does after getting through a horrific awful thing in the past. I hope it will be after palin goes back to alaska and gets out of national politics. after obama is president. and we don't have to be afraid of these imbeciles anymore.

-----------------------------------------------------

Seriously...this certainly looks like the person writing it (!!!) believed it was a real clip.

Whatever.

My only problem with the whole thing was that it said "Unedited footage"...which was not true and pretty unfair, even as much as I dislike Sarah Palin.

And it's rather sad to see something being called "unedited" when it is, and then people justifying it being called "unedited". I mean, what if some Repub site did the same thing with Obama...put words in his mouth and called the clip "unedited"...

You people mean to tell me it would be hilarious?

I think not.

29. Sarah Palin...dumb?
I don't think so. Taking into account that there are many different kinds of intelligence.

I think she's intelligent in a crafty, scary kind of way.

And she probably has a touch of some mental illness that pushes her toward a particular religious fanaticism.

And she's woefully under informed on a lot of the larger issues that would qualify her for VP...or...God forbid...President...

but dumb?

And I just told you I was speaking about the original when I made that comment. Only a moran would think this was the real interview. The voice was not blended, the farting noise at the end, and that's clearly not her voice. Do you honestly think that was shown on tv???? How clueless can one be to think this was real interview and be concerned that others would think that too?

35. yeah, I know it was your comment
Still, there are a lot of very clueless people in this world...perhaps you hadn't noticed over the past, oh...seven years...?

But that isn't my point, really

It's not sporting to call something "unedited" when it IS edited, even if the biggest "morans" in the world would know it is edited.

Let's say someone takes a photo of you and posts your head Photoshopped on the body of some person who weighs 800 lbs. Or the person takes your head and Photoshops it on the body of a snake...or whatever...

Let's say someone does one of those things and then calls the photo "unedited".

Is that fair? Even if the biggest "moran" in the world would know it's not really you from the neck down. If you would be OK with that, then fine...more power to ya.

That's my only problem.

calling something "unedited" when it's not.

25. The very first thing I thought of
As I was watching that part of the real interview this AM (kind of sorry I missed the whole thing) the first thing that came to my mind was...

George Bush on 9/11

you know...the deer in the headlights look after they had told him about the planes.....

blank stare

only with Palin, I could also see a couple of little wheels turning in her head....desperation, maybe....

gotta come up with an answer...

and it doesn't even really have to make sense to the "base" voters...

oh, and the squirming while she was desperately seeking an answer...priceless! :7

30. My husband plays chess and poker
And he is good at it because he is able to read people. In fact, one of the reasons why we get along so well is because we're people watchers. Anyway, you should watch the interview without sound. And instead of looking at it like Palin being interviewed, look at like you're watching a job interview from across the room. After you've watched it, what would you think of the exchange? How comfortable or truthful do you think Palin is in answering the questions?

To me, Palin's body language - her stooped shoulders, the lip licking, the way she looked at Gibson like she was a kid trying to please a parent, her hand movements, her blink rate, the blank stare, her breathing, etc. - and Gibson's body language - the way he twirled his foot while she was talking, his blink rate, his hand gestures, the exasperation on his face and in his voice, etc. - were really interesting.

31. I'm not real good at chess, but
I do like to "read" people...especially on TV

I too watch for the rapid eye blinking and the "I'm trying to think of a good answer while I'm lying" blank stare...

Crossed arms, crossed legs, relaxed pose, mirroring, facial and body tension...the whole bit

One of the other signs I've read about is when a person answers a question, which way do his/her eyes move...OK, I don't know how true this is, but supposedly if they shift to the right (the person's right), s/he is not being honest...whereas if they shift to the left (again the person's left) s/he is likely telling the truth.

Something to do with right and left brain stuff.

I guess that's what makes communication by telephone...or computer...so difficult for some of us. We need the whole picture...

:)

37. It is a blend of things
Edited on Fri Sep-12-08 10:56 AM by Mabus
You have to watch a person to determine their "baseline". Sometimes there are cultural or familial determinants. I can tell when my niece is upset because she cocks her head just like her mom, which is the same thing most of my siblings do and we all got it from our mom. Some of them, put their hand on their hip which is what my dad does and which is what his mom did. That's why reading body language is a totality of the circumstances deal whereby "what are they saying" and "how are they saying" it work in tandem. It's why I'm always amused whenever I see footage of Condi shaking her head "no" while she's saying "yes" and vice versa. She gives herself away so easily.

Also, as a politician who is currently being coached, Palin is more aware of her body language right now. So, you have to take into account that she knows she's under scrutiny. Think about how McCain, in the last day or so that he and Palin were campaigning together, was trying not to stare at her ass and/or play with his ring. I also noticed that Cindy's outfits were very bright (to catch John's eye/focus) and that the last one showed her cleavage. They were doing every thing they could think of to distract McCain from staring at Palin's ass.

So, Palin is being coached about her body language. She's being told all about her hand movements. She's being told not to fidget and to try to project as much confidence as she can. As a result, she was cupping her hands in a way that almost looked uncomfortable for her. I also think it was responsible for the blank stares. She was trying to keep eye contact with Gibson to figure out how she was doing in his eyes and simultaneously trying not to look like she was doing it. The two kind of canceled each other out and she ended up with a blank stare.

Two more things. Both my husband and I have worked as attorneys with criminal clients. We've had plenty of experience of people lying to us. Also, if you want to become a better chess player, in addition to studying games and working on your own, you should memorize the board and practice watching your opponents' eye movements. You can get a lot of information about what line of attack or defense that your opponent is planning by watching their eye movement. If you watch them closely enough you can visualize for yourself as they move the pieces & pawns around the board. My husband's board memory is phenomenal. He spends most of the game watching his opponent and rarely looks at the board.

Also edited to add: BAck in my old hometown, there was a group of us environmentalists/activists who spoke at the city and county meetings. One of the things we did was watch films of ourselves and work on annoying and distracting habits in speech, body language and presentation. It was something I did in law school classes (as part of the class) and it was invaluable. Although most of us were middle-aged, hippie, leftist radicals, we'd show up in business attire. One of our friends owned a salon and we'd get our hair and, if necessary, our make-up done. We went "undercover" and looked just like "normal" people and more people listened. ;)

38. About the cultural thing
I had heard about something which happened some time ago...and probably still happens a lot, as the US becomes more and more a mix of cultures...that a school principal had given a couple of first or second generation minority kids detention or suspensions because he thought they were lying when they would not look him in the eye during questioning.

He didn't know that in some cultures, looking another person directly in the eyes is rude.

Just like in some cultures there's a much smaller boundary of "personal space" than in the US... I forget, but I think the limits of closeness tolerated here, and probably in the UK as well, are about 18 inches for strangers...a bit less for friends, and less still for intimates....whereas in some Middle Eastern countries the boundary hardly exists and all and people are talking right up in each others' faces.

Photographs, too, are rather fascinating...Less so the older ones where people had to sit or stand in rigid poses while the shutter worked...but some of the more modern photos where posing is less formal...trying to figure out the friend/family dynamics from the way people are standing, sitting, or otherwise posing...

I don't know if schools even do it anymore, but I remember from grammar school having a book full of nothing but photos, and we kids had to look at the photos and write an essay on what we thought was going on in them. I guess maybe that was the start of my own interest in trying to figure out what's going on beneath the words...

41. I point like an Arapaho
I use my chin and I jut it out. I do it because in my mom's culture (Southern Arapaho) pointing is considered rude. I remember pointing at something and my mom pulling my hand down and telling me it was rude to point. Then she'd show me how to point. It was also useful because, if you do it subtly enough, you can draw attention to something without being obvious. My mom liked to use "sign" language because it meant all ten of us kids would take our cues from her. It was the way she kept us under control. It was also a "family" thing that other people didn't pick up on because they weren't looking for it.

I remember back when, after spending most of the summer with my Indian relatives out in western Oklahoma, how different it felt to be back among my white neighborhood. There were little things like people seemed more distant and stand-offish. In Indian neighborhoods, people were more interactive with both each other and with what the kids where doing. It was the difference between living in a neighborhood and a community, if that makes any sense. There was always a period of readjustment from depending on one set of rules and another.

Photographs are fun to analyze. Especially, like you point out, more contemporary ones because they aren't always posing and/or aware that pictures are being taken.

When I took psychology classes and helped out both getting and giving TATs, exercises like having someone make up stories about pictures can be very revealing. And, besides, it is fun to do.

39. I grew up biracial and was a psych major for a few semesters
Growing up biracial (American Indian and Caucasian) in Oklahoma in the 60's and 70's was a little rough depending on the neighborhood. For the most part, it was safe where I lived. We were the only minorities in a white-only neighborhood. I had to learn to read body language or get my ass kicked. When I got to college, I started out as a psych major. This involved signing up for various experiments as a guinea pig and later, helping to conduct the experiments and working with a lot of people. Add to this, I worked as a waitress in everything from a family diner to a college bars. I was also a bartender.

It's amazing to me how much people are influenced by body language without realizing it. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who does, let's say, more often than most.
