7. Lots of people probably saw it, but...
as Candy Crowley (CNN) said in what must have been the only true statement she's made in at least seven years...

People who don't like Sarah Palin will think she failed horribly in that interview, and people who do like her will think she did just great.

And, sadly, that's the truth of it, I think

It's going to take the equivalent of moving a mountain to change the opinions of people who think she's the greatest thing since indoor plumbing.

Kind of like Bush vs Kerry in the debates

Bush looked like a bad imitation of Charlie McCarthy...so much so that I was tempted to almost feel sorry for him (Bush, not Charlie). But when the ratings came out, people thought he glittered like the North Star on a moonless night.

yech

what can ya do about clueless voters?

:puke:

I held my nose and stomach, and visited freeperland after Failin's 1st night on teevee with Charlie.

A few freepers thought she did great, but most recognized that she did NOT do great. Many blamed mean Charlie. Many blamed incompetent editing by abc.

But a fair number were very unhappy with incompetent, ignorant Failin'. As in, "I love her to death, but..."

And a few, hard to believe, were outright honest. The best line I saw was when one stooopid wrote something on the lines of:

"Of course she was nervous what with everyone waiting for her to make a mistake. What do you expect?"

"I expect her to be calm, poised and able to answer the questions. That's why she's in the big league."

Wow! The feel pretty confident that the patina is going to wear off this shiny new bauble very quickly.

12. Or the "Service Forum?!"
How in the world could any sentient being look at those two men, and think McCain (who can't string two sentences together without reverting to practiced "bullet points") would make a better president?

4. Bill is getting obnoxious, Paul is awesome!
Edited on Sat Sep-13-08 07:16 AM by jimlup
Bill is a bit obnoxious but I do give him a lot of leeway. He seems obsessed with his piece against piece chess stuff and the Hillary to counter Palin idea.

Paul is spot on here.

Speaking of chess, Begala is absolutely right. Barack needs to go after the "king" - John McCain. Why bother to take the weak, exposed and out of play queen when you can win the game by taking down the other sides king. Checkmate! McCain is going down!

We have a win here, we just have to execute it!

10. In Chess I thought the Queen was more "powerful"
than the King...who one protects....with the Queen and all the other pieces.

But Palin should be ignored as much as possible... which won't be completely. Remind people she was not elected in the primaries but merely CHOSEN with no vetting.

11. Normally she is...
But this particular Palin queen is sitting unprotected in a weak position but managing to shield the king (McCain) from direct attack. McCain is vulnerable if we just ignore the queen! My point is going after and taking down the king results in a win in chess. Taking the queen usually results in a win but isn't the whole game. Let's take down the king and get this one won!

My point (and yours) is it is time to ignore stupid diversions. We need the win here. Let's take down the McCain directly. McCain is vulnerable and is going down! Palin is a stupid side issue, let her fall on her own ignorance.

19. Maher's chess metaphor - where it fails

First, yes, you attack the king whenever possible. You sacrifice the queen to save or attack the king.

But Maher was talking strategy, not piece moves.

In a game between masters, there are momentum shifts. One can temporarily go on the defensive and it looks like the other person is winning. But the defense, once the attack runs its course, turns into a devastating counter-attack.

Perhaps a football metaphor would work better. Palin was a "big play" - a quick six points off a turnover. But she wasn't a game changer.

22. Political Football
Yes, the football metaphor is somewhat appropriate. Still, I would not say that the Obama strategists "fumbled". Instead an unknown player walked on the field as a wide receiver and on the next play scored an unexpected touchdown.

It is hard to actually believe though, yes? I mean, I would never have taken the American people for that naive, ignorant and gullible as to fall in love with Sarah Palin. Maybe it is a bad soap opera plot, maybe that is the analogy we've all been trying to find ...

21. but the King is more critical
one can lose every piece but the King and stay in the game.

One cannot even contemplate another move when the King is in danger.

9. The misogony was AWFUL. I thought the best part of the show was
Janine Garafalo. Sorry, I don't know how to spell her name. I wish I had half her intelligence. When she had a radio show her personality seemed a bit too abrasive. I prefer a Rachel Maddow to her that way. But, on Maher's show she really rocked!

18. I love Bill Maher
In spite of his flaws, he's a smart fucking guy. It would be nice if we could get him to dial back his sexism, as he's great on other issues.

However, Paul Begala gave some great ammo that the Obama campaign should absolutely use for an ad: the bit about that oil lobbyist who would run the old man's transition team. And the voiceover person should say something like, "Haven't the oil lobbyists been in Washington far too long?" and imply that Obama wouldn't have lobbyists in charge of his transition. Which hopefully he wouldn't.
