McCain/Palin: A Bridge to Nowhere Campaign |
|
Unlike Bill Clinton who promised (and delivered) a bridge to the 21st century, McCain & Palin are offering us a bridge to nowhere for the future of the United States. Ad inspired by late-night thread over here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x7051935#7053253

1. I really like the premise! |
|
I'm debating with myself over whether it should have a voiceover--if it's for TV, probably yes, on the internet, perhaps it's not necessary. And the "thanks, but no thanks"--definitely!! Good job.

9. The remise should be the theme of the entire campaign for the next 51 days |
|
McCain/Palin created this golden opportunity by repeating that "Thanks, but no thanks" lie so many times in the first week. This concept allows Obama to make positive points, contrast the McCain position and then end with "Thanks, but no thanks" each time, reminding the public of that stupid lie.
Seriously, "Thanks, but no thanks" will destroy Palin, but as Hillary's Bosnia lie was the biggest thing that did her in. The American public can get things line this. Palid said she went to Congress and told them "Thank, but no thanks".
No she didn't. That never happened. It is nothing more or less than a bald-faced lie repeated dozens of times.

2. That is great. I wish they would use it. And some that hit them with all the lies. Expose them for |
|
the lies they have told, and tie that to the Bush lies he has told. They are the same. No Change.

I wasn't sure what background music to use... The lyrics fit with the message, though: rain (i.e., shit) been pouring down for years, who'll stop the rain? Obama. Do you have other suggestions though?

5. Absolutely LOVE the premise!! Cut it down to as close to 30 seconds as you can get. |

A few more pictures if possible? Not real sure about choice of background music.
BUT, all in all, a great start on a great ad! Better than some of the stuff the Obama campaign has been putting out...

You done good! I would add voice over or something to catch attention, ie, to make people stop and look, otherwise message will be lost. Great content. Keep up the good work!:bounce:

As a director of communications in a large corporation, allow me to add two cents: (1) The ad is a little thin as it stands and needs more development. (2) I agree with another poster, who suggested a voiceover. Still images of Bush/McCain failure or the status quo displaying as each item is read would be much more powerful. (Example: "Nowhere on energy policy" with photo of gas pump prices; quick dissolve to: "Nowhere on healthcare" with photo of dejected lower middle class person sitting in an emergency room; etc.). (3) The music is the wrong choice. To a large swath of the public, it will bring to mind nothing but Woodstock and "those Birkenstock-wearing, granola-eating activists" who "I want nothing to do with." (4) I do think the "Thanks, but no thanks" meme can work if pounced on before it fades from memory (which will be soon). But this ad needs a fair amount of work.

12. I like it, instead of the picture of McCain and Palin |
|
have the one with McCain hugging Bush. The less we see of Palin the better, maybe the MSM will get tired of her if we just ignore her. You need a voice-over for TV someone like that obnoxious bitch that does McCain's ads, most Americans are too lazy to read anyway.

Long time DU reader, first time poster.
I'm hardly a communications scholar, but am an armchair rhetorician. As a fundraiser by profession, I spend a lot of time trying to craft persuasive messages. While this ad does a fine job making decided voters feel more convinced of their decision, it does little to change the minds of undecided voters who will make or break this election.
Progressives continue to believe that truth and facts are persuasive and that voting decisions are rational. I agree they should be, but they are not. They never have been, they never will be. These decisions are emotional and irrational (not meaning "crazy" but simply without rational thought). Karl Rove understands this. Under his direction (and other evil geniuses), the right learned to use language like a scalpel--sharp, specific, surgical. By using language like "cultural elites,""Death Tax," and "no child left behind," the Republicans are experts at getting the middle class to vote against their own best interests--often even knowingly. The left, however, continues to use language like bubble-wrap, surrounding an issue in layers and layers to keep anyone from getting jostled or offended.
You want to use the "Bridge to Nowhere" theme? Use the archival footage of the car disappearing over the collapsed section of the Bay Bridge (during the 89 quake), use footage of the collapsed bridge in Minnesota, use the famous footage of "Galloping Gertie" the Tacoma Narrows Bridge twisting itself apart. These are pretty fearsome images. Use post-Katrina images of bridges that start and end in the water. Use images of old bridges being imploded. There would be some blowback (especially since the Minnesota event is so recent-but since Republicans were so good at cutting highway funds, we could still maintain higher ground).
We SHOULD win this one. We WILL win this one if we fight hard. Ads like this will lose Florida and Ohio because they are just toothless.

16. It's not about the production values, dumbass |
|
it's about using youtube to show people how to hang McPalin's own deeds, own policy shortfalls and their own words around their neck in a humorous, easy to understand manner. This is a quick-and-dirty video designed to get the message that McCain and Palin are building a bridge to nowhere for the entire country out to the muddled thinkers in ObamaLand who believe having Barack say "enough is enough" is going to get it done. He's not trying for a creative award from Ad Age.

leave the public memory. I also thinks you should add in images with each of the "nowhere" lines, as the poster down-thread suggested.

With the suggestions already mentioned, you're onto a really good and memorable ad.
I hope you will revise it and test it on DU again.
The bridge to nowhere campaign and "Thanks, but no thanks" is excellent.
