Sorry about the poor loss of some of the pics. I'll see if I can fix it.

However, this is in response to the Racists that are Members of Focus on the Family.

edit: be sure to rate it up either here or @ youtube

2. Terribly sad racism still exists!
Goes to show the under educated and insecure rednecks know how to use a computer to trump garbage up like this but are still too full of hate to use it wisely.

'undereducated and insecure rednecks'. I lived in an area of Illinois known for the rednecks, but the worse racism my son suffered in school came not from the poor rednecks but from the children of the educated professionals. Why, you might ask since some of the poor were racist also? Well, the problem was that the school authorities might punish, if they chose to, the poor but did not dare say anything to the affluent and their children. I had the principal of the high school apologize to me because his hands were tied by those in power and he could not do anything about the trouble my son was having.

We moved out of that area and to an area where the population was more diverse and where I had a new job. Unbeknown to me this place also was a snake pit for racism, and there was even yearly KKK rallies on a farm on the outskirts of the town. I left that area eight years ago, and now live in an area where the racism is more covert, but it still exists and it is in all sectors of the population. The university is the reason for the liberal populations existence, but there are professors that are as racist as any uneducated redneck you ever saw. I know because I had classes with a few of them. And what makes them worse is they are also classiest. I call them snobbish educated idiots.

7. Thank you for viewing it
Well when I saw how these Racists were selling this product for $10 a pop, and pretended they didn't think they were using racial stereotypes, it really pissed me off.

I thought this would be a answer to their stupidity and hatefulness. For people claiming to be christian and then do something like this is beyond the pale. I thought Jesus taught tolerance:shrug:

I guess that is why I don't think they are christians but use Christianity as a means of controlling the masses. Christianity is just a convenient vehicle.

Bob DeMoss used to be a Youth Counselor, I wonder how he counseled the children. I wouldn't be surprised if he taught them how to Hate someone because of the color of ones skin, or that someone may have opposing viewpoints.

It IS disgusting and Disturbing to say the least.

14. I'm going to get flamed for this, but...
Edited on Sun Sep-21-08 04:27 AM by jwlashta
other than perhaps the back of the box, what is the racism in question? Is it the depiction of Obama on the box? Is it because the product is called "Obama Waffles"--which would actually refer to Obama "waffling" on the issue, and although it would be factually wrong, it would not be racist. If it is the back of the box that you are referring to, then why are we not discussing the hundreds of other products that depict ethnic groups in a stereotypical fashion.

Perhaps I'm just missing something...

16. It looks like you are Canadian so you might not actually get all of the references
It is a reference to Aunt Jemima, who was a caricature of a "house slave". It's making fun of the uppity black man and trying to feminize him because in our culture, worse even than being black is being a girl. To anyone from the southern parts of this god forsaken country, it isn't nearly as subtle as it might be for you.

18. Canadians have Aunt Jemima syrup
and I don't see the reference. Aunt Jemima looked the role of the "house slave," where as on the box, Obama is depicted as wearing dress shirt and tie--which he regularly sports (he is running for the presidency, so I think everyone would expect him to dress the part; there's nothing "uppity" about it). I should also like to point out that the racist characterizations you are bringing up--namely the "house slave" and the "uppity black man"--are characterizations that black people have (and I am hesitant to use the word "typically") leveled against other black people (I distinctly recall in the Autobiography of Malcolm X the use of either the phrase "house slave," or, more basely, "house negro" used by Malcolm X).

I also don't see how it "feminizes" (I think you mean "emasculates") him; you'd have to elaborate on that point.

19. Perhaps the Focus on the Family Members shouldn't project their stereotypes
The front of the box which shows Obama with extremely large red lips. On the top of the box they depicted Obama in Muslim headdress with an arrow and text about pointing it towards Mecca.

Activists at a conservative political forum snapped up boxes of waffle mix depicting Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama as a racial stereotype on its front and wearing Arab-like headdress on its top flap.

Values Voter Summit organizers cut off sales of Obama Waffles boxes on Saturday, saying they had not realized the boxes displayed "offensive material." The summit and the exhibit hall where the boxes were sold had been open since Thursday afternoon.

The box was meant as political satire, said Mark Whitlock and Bob DeMoss, two writers from Franklin, Tenn., who created the mix. They sold it for $10 a box from a rented booth at the summit sponsored by the lobbying arm of the Family Research Council.

While Obama Waffles takes aim at Obama's politics by poking fun at his public remarks and positions on issues, it also plays off the old image of the pancake-mix icon Aunt Jemima, which has been widely criticized as a demeaning stereotype. Obama is portrayed with popping eyes and big, thick lips as he stares at a plate of waffles and smiles broadly.

Placing Obama in Arab-like headdress recalls the false rumor that he is a follower of Islam, though he is actually a Christian.

On the back of the box, Obama is depicted in stereotypical Mexican dress, including a sombrero, above a recipe for "Open Border Fiesta Waffles" that says it can serve "4 or more illegal aliens." The recipe includes a tip: "While waiting for these zesty treats to invade your home, why not learn a foreign language?"

The novelty item also takes shots at 2004 Democratic nominee John Kerry, Obama's wife, Michelle, and Obama's former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

Maybe you just want to miss it, try looking a little harder. Just like the intolerant jerks who came up with the idea. I live in Texas so I know a little bit about racism, I was raised in that kind of environment.

23. I stand corrected
Edited on Mon Sep-22-08 07:41 AM by jwlashta
If there is an old Aunt Jemima depicted in the same way as Obama is depicted on the box, then I stand corrected. When I watched the video I thought that it was more of a caricature drawing like any that could be made by a caricaturist.

I did find it strange that your video made no mention of Obama in Muslim headdress with an arrow through his head pointing to Mecca; that seems to be more of an attempt to assassinate his character--not that being a Muslim is bad, per se, but that Islam has been and continues to be vilified in the west (and in America in particular).

I found the comment that "maybe just want to miss it" incredibly insulting and just plain pathetic. If you want to attack me, attack my arguments; you don't know me, so don't try to label me. Growing up in Texas does not make you anymore knowledgeable about racism than the next person; unfortunately, racism can exist anywhere and at any level of society. My initial issues with the video have been mentioned; my motive, if you would like to know, was the belief that some people (the media, in particular) seem to look for racism where it doesn't exist, just as some people look for sexism where it doesn't exist (case and point, Obama's comment about pigs wearing lipstick).

What is the link for your citation?

24. I apologize for insulting you, but now you are in the same boat
by calling me pathetic. I don't know you just as you don't know me, and there have been several people who join DU to cause turmoil. I'm not implying that you are such a person. However, when a new member shows up that is generally the perception. Believe me because it happened to me more than once when I first joined. So, I guess I was being a little hasty in my post.

But you did mention that I wasn't using other lines of stereotypes in my video, and that is because this video was in response to Focus on the Family and how they treat other christians.

I suppose I could redo the video to mention the box top, but I was trying to get something out quickly and I failed to include that portion of the story. I was also trying to make it under 30 seconds, then it turned into 60 seconds and ended up being 90 seconds.

The only reason I mentioned Texas and how I know so much about racism in my state, is because I was raised in that kind of a household. It took me a long time to shake off the ideas I was taught. I evolved and have moved on. I don't like having to admit the sins of my family ties, because it is painful and hurtful to relive the trauma I had to live through.

Can you imagine being told as a very young child if a black person touches you, you will turn black?.?.?
This happened to me and I remember when we went shopping and a little black girl rubbed against me and me riding all the way home with my arm out the window hoping the air would blow away the blackness. That is just one of the painful experiences I had to deal with as a child. It still hurts to this day that I was taught to feel that way about other human beings.

And of course I realize racism exist everywhere in society. That's the problem.

Again I apologize for my comment. I didn't mean to diss you.

Back in '98 I spent a month in BC, mostly on Vancouver Island. I loved it up there and wish I could live there. You are very lucky and fortunate to be surrounded by such beauty on a daily basis.

25. hatchet buried
I realize that some people join the DU to cause turmoil; honestly, I'm a fan of playing devil's advocate (or at least offering a different opinion/option/view on a discussion topic). I admit that it can put people off, but I figure that a discussion forum should involve more discussion and less cheer-leading. I do appreciate the fact that you did not equate my initial disagreement with you as support for the other side--that sort of black and white, "with us or against us" attitude, is a wall to honest discourse.

I lived on Vancouver Island for 23 years (I currently reside in South Korea--a country whose president enjoys an even worse approval rating amongst his people than Bush does in America). Indeed, the Island is beautiful, but it also has its dark undercurrent. The small towns there are just like any small towns anywhere. Black people are not the major target of racism (because the black population in small towns is almost nonexistent), but rather the First Nations people are the prime target.
