1. Hunters are a minority of gun owners |
|
Something to remember.
Part of the issue is not "taking away guns" per se it's banning guns that meet arbitrary, mutable, and emotionally-driven criteria from future sale and posession.
Part of it is about how many and what kind of hoops one must go through to own a gun. The financial and legal hassle, in other words.
Part of it is about what is constitutional and what isn't.
Part of it is about what is effective and what isn't.

5. Remember, it's a "well-regulated militia" |
|
Obama does need all the support he can get, but I don't consider hunting a sport. Shooting at targets, fine, but killing defenseless animals bothers me greatly.
And there are some people who should NOT own guns, such as anyone who has, shall we say, a history of violence.

6. If you're not hunting, sport shooting or have s shotgun for home protection, then what are you doing |
|

What is your goal?
Hunting is a treasured culture where I grew up in The Dakotas. I'm proud of this group taking a principled stand.
Obama is NOT going to take away your guns, even for home protection, but like Wall Street, there must be regulation so that gangs don't each have .50 caliber machine guns at their disposal.
ON EDIT: Excuse me, I meant to direct this to post #1 instead.

9. Considering your screen name... |
|
...I'm not surprised killing defenseless animals bothers you greatly.
If it helps any remember that the animals shot were organically-fed hormone-free antibiotic-free free-range animals before they were killed.

10. I'm talking of people who hunt for sport... |
|
...or to decorate their fucking walls. As much as I dislike people hunting for food, it is far less objectionable than people who eat factory-produced meat.

2. I like this. We need more thoughtful people who hunt to speak eloquently about Obama and how he |
|
supports the right to bear arms.
Too often gun owners are portrayed as nutcases even though only a tiny fraction are--just like in the population at large.
Most of the people I know, and most of them are liberals, own guns and would be really pissed if the government tried to confiscate them.
It's too bad that the NRA has been pumping out lies regarding Obama's stance on gun ownership. But that's what the NRA does--makes money keeping the right-wing gun owners' fears stoked.

3. Obama does have a poor record on gun rights |
|
AS A STATE SENATOR.
Which as a representative of a very anti-gun district, is probably to be expected.
I just hope Congress isn't dumb enough to get any anti-gun legislation to this desk. I'd rather not test him on this issue.

7. Maybe like many of us, Obama's opinion has evolved as he has talked to hunters and sports shooters |
|
more often? Only rigid people do not keep their minds open enough to process new information and change their stances.

As president, his constituancy will be far larger than the anti-gun urban area he represented before.
Howver on both sides of there issue there is a certain degreee of what might politely be called "inflexability". For example, because anti-assault-weapon language was put in the Democratic Party platform back in '88 or '92 (I forget which offhand) it seems to be destined to stay there even after the devestating Congressional defeat in '94 and continuing Democratic losses until 2006. In fact, just a month ago they voted to retain such language in the party's 2008 platform.
