Senate race ad round-up: Labor money and a swift boater drop in

Both campaigns and outside interest groups continue to pour funds into advertising in Kentucky's U.S. Senate race between U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Louisville) and businessman Bruce Lunsford (D-Louisville).

One new television spot targeting McConnell is funded by a relatively new 527 group known as "Citizens for Strength and Security." The group is up with a thirty-second ad hitting McConnell on many of the economic issues - such as support for NAFTA and CAFTA - included in earlier spots from the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and other outside groups.

National Public Radio reports the 527 behind that ad was organized by a former aide to former Presidential candidate and U.S. Sen. John Edwards (D-N.C.). Ads from the group targeting U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-N.C.) were reportedly funded mostly by labor union contributions.

NPR also reports a radio spot targeting Lunsford is in part funded by a key financier of the controversial Swift Boat Veterans for Truth.

The First Amendment Alliance is after Lunsford with those ads. That group reportedly received a $50,000 injection from Texas Developer Bob Perry, who founded the Swift Boat group that infamously targeted U.S. Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) in the 2004 presidential campaign.
