4. The "eyes of the world" matter...

People underestimate the impact of this ambiguous thing we call "world opinion". Its effects are not always obvious but it touches everything from security, trade, influence in the policies of other countries, and more obvious things like treaties and such.

Just look at the drop off over the past 8 years in foreign brain power coming into our research universities. That has a massive impact on our economy. Good will is way more important than just not getting spit on when you're traveling as a tourist in Paris. It's touches all of us in material ways.
