1. A pretty good analysis. A couple of more things.
1) According to Revelation, the Jewish people would convert to Christianity or die. A minor point, but just wanted to clarify.

2) What Maher doesn't explore is how this ties into their views on Russia and Iran. If one is to take Revelation literally, one will find that it is predicted that an empire of the north, Gog, and and empire in the east, Magog, will launch an attack on Israel that will lead to the battle of Jerusalem in which Jesus Christ leads the celestial armies into victory over the forces of the anti-Christ. Since the foundation of Israel, many evangelicals and fundamentalists have identified Gog and Magog as the USSR/Russia and Iran respectively. Thus any saber rattling towards those countries can be explained within this context.

11. And how will Obama's
Christian Faith play into all of this?

Will he also continue to support Israel to no end so that the prophecies may become complete?

4. Thinking process
I don't think that's the thinking process going on either. With religion...fundie or moderate....there is at some point NO thought process at all. At some point thinking just stops. Otherwise they'd all reject the prehistoric guess that there is some supernatural thing called a god. Faith is the end of inquiry.

8. I think it's tied the biblical prophesy of Israel being strong again at the end of the world
Edited on Thu Nov-06-08 03:46 PM by Nothing Without Hope
A lot of these far-right evangelicals are looking forward to the end of the world quite soon, when they will be raptured into eternal bliss and the rest of us will be consigned to eternal agony. Nice folks.

But a strong Israel fits into their apocalyptic world view. They think the world can't end unless that part is in place, and they really want the world to end. So as I see it, it's not really about Israel as a real-world country containing real-world people, it's about getting to their own heavenly reward as soon as possible.
