He will be asked to deliver, in a very public way, an endorsement or some form of legislation that will effectively make him an untouchable in the eyes of either conservatives or the fundie wing of the Republican party. This will make it impossible for him to achieve his wet dream of running as VP on a GOP ticket in the future. (An option that John McCain wanted before having Palin shoved down his throat.)

Once he has delivered on that action item, whatever it is, he will become persona non grata on both sides of the aisle, and will slink back to Connecticut in 2012 for a retirement in which he asks himself why, why me?
