39. My first vote ever..
was for Jesse in the primaries.

So long ago, I can't remember if I actually voted in the presidential election.
I think once he was gone, I lost interest.
I've always been apolitical ...until 2004.
The first candidate I actually worked for was John Bonifaz....

7. What I posted on YouTube:
The look on Jesse Jackson's face as the tears rolled down his cheeks was absolutely the most poignant moment for me also. As a 60s activist, I couldn't help but think that this moment in time was the ultimate validation for African Americans as being truly equal in the eyes of white America. It was SO bittersweet for me - sweet that this moment happened in my lifetime, but bitter that slavery and racism ever existed in our country or anywhere else in the world, and still do.

So, so many people never dreamed that they would see this in their lifetime, including me. I don't care what anyone else says about Jessee - he's been through it, and he may have make some caustic comments, but I attribute that to his wanting the younger generation that DIDN'T experience the turmoil of the 60's to take advances lightly. Young people don't realize that the significance of the Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act of the 60s--or the shame that such had to even be legislated.

As an aside: I look into the eyes of babies, small children--so innocent when they come into this world, and I weep. I know ppl must think I am crazy, but those precious, precious babies--looking at the world in wide-eyed wonder. What will they be exposed to? Will they face ugly racism? Will they be taught racism? Will they be taught kindness and tolerance? What kind of world will we leave for them?

I didn't realize how uptight I have been for months until I woke up on November 5th. I was at peace!

And, for me, this election can be summed up in three words: THE WORLD REJOICES

(Sorry Tom - short on time, and it all just spilled out on your post.)

14. You know, that's what JJ looked like he was thinking about.
That's what I guessed. Maybe it takes having the background of memories to get it. I do.

The Spring and Summer of 1968 is something I'll never forget - coming as it did, after other assassinations, riots, marches, martial law - so much. That election and its campaign was cataclysmic. (And this one could've been too, if it had gone differently.) I too, flashed back on "the fallen" and the words they said and the things I saw. Those past thoughts alongside the present of Obama's election was truly an overwhelming convergence... just to grasp, let alone to feel.

Jesse has been through a lot.

17. It was a vision: Jesse Jackson surrounded by white faces, weeping silently.
It was like he was suspended in time. Very, very powerful. I can only imagine how amazing this moment is for those under the boot of an unenlightened America for all these years. It was probably the most poignant moment I've witnessed in my lifetime. Thanks so much for sharing this with us. Cenk is a mensch.

I grew up during the Civil Rights Movement of the 60's and I remember
those who died fighting for the moment we saw Tuesday night.

I miss several old friends who fought with me and are no longer with us.

Thanks for sharing this beautiful clip from Cenk, one of my favorite people!

26. I'm down with the comment, but I'll tell you, I'm not over Jessie wanting to cut off Barack's nuts.
So, I'm down with the sentiment of the heroic people who have passed, but not Jessie. Jessie can cry me a river. I got called on this on election night, but didn't fight back, because I just didn't feel like fighting. Jessie is an opportunist. :) Sorry.

Do you have any idea what Rev. Jackson has gone through? Nevermind...

On the other hand, the more I see of Cenk, the more I come to like him. I am looking forward to having him articulate his views on the Obama Presidency.

33. That Was Great
Yesterday my husband and I decided to go to the Henry Ford Museum. In that museum as some will know is the actual bus that Rosa Parks rode on that historical day. As I stepped onto that bus I was overwhelmed by the thought of the circle being completed with the win of Barack Obama. It made me proud that I live in this country and that soon we will have a President we can all be proud of.

35. Because he's out of a job?
It's going to be harder to run an extortion racket based on race when there's a black man in the highest office.

JJ: "The Man is oppressing the black man."
Reply: "What are you talking about? The Man is black!"

And that's good. There should be no need for a Jesse Jackson. Time to put him out to pasture.

38. I wept with Jesse as well....
I am an immigrant to this country and as white as they come. I cried on Tuesday night, even before seeing Jesse Jackson weeping, but that put me over the edge. I was born in 1966 and lived all over the world, visiting over 60 countries in the process. I came to the US to go to College and stayed.I became an American because I wanted to.I do not remember the civil rights era, but I have always been a student of history. I, like Jesse Jackson wept for what Tuesday night meant, for us who are still here and more so, for those who fought and paid the ultimate price and are not here to bare witness. What America achieved on Tuesday should make everyone of us weep, for those who fought for freedom and equality along the way, but were not here to witness it in person - we should all be proud of shedding a tear of joy for the world and all of those who came before us. It is not about race anymore, it should never have been about race and we proved it.

I have never been prouder to be an American. Only in America. Go Obama!

again this a.m. Posts such as yours give old activists such as myself that "rush of adrenaline" to keep us motivated and moving forward.

As an immigrant, you can appreciate what so many in our country take for granted.

44. so very, very Right On, Cenk. thank you
King's words were very much in my heart as President Obama gave his victory speech and said 'we might not get there in a year, we might not get there in one term, but I promise you we will get there."

Yes, I wish all the martyrs could have seen it.

I wish my wonderful Grandfather and my Phenomenal Father could have seen it. I wish my Social Studies teacher at Von Steuben Jr. High on the East Side of Detroit could have seen it. All the people who taught me what I know about bigotry and racism that live now only in my heart. I wish they could have seen it.

45. I agree young turk.
I fully agree with you young turk....

another thing that was so touching was President Obama's deliberate use of Kingian phraseology:

"we may not get there in one ear or one term...but WE WILL GET THERE!"

highly reminiscent of

"I may not get there with you...but WE AS A PEOPLE..WILL GET to the promised land!"

everything...was just beautiful..and historic.....and DIVINELY DESIGNED.

lotsa divine touches all over that night - and this 2 year campaign.
