I have a friend who's studying Spanish and needs conversation practice. The JWs came to his door a couple of weeks ago. He told them he needed someone who spoke Spanish, and they sent a Spanish-speaker around.

So, now the guy comes over, talks to him in Spanish about whatever they talk about, and my friend gets free conversation practice for nothing. He said he's willing to listen to their bullshit as long as he gets free Spanish lessons.

And I have permission to run over him with my car, if he starts buying into their nonsense -- but since he's already escaped from the Seventh Day Adventists, I don't think that's likely to happen.

I was out cutting grass many years ago on a real hot day, and saw them coming. My neighbor clued me in. So I shut the mower off, went into the house, and started sucking down a cold beer. When they came to the door, they were greeted by a guy wearing a pair of cutoffs, tennis shoes who was drinking a beer. I said that they must be awfully hot wearing those suits and out walking the neighborhood on such a hot day. I then offered them a beer. "Oh no, we are not allowed to drink alcohol." "And I am not allowed to have Mormons on my property, so leave." And they have never been around here since. But having a gay couple greeting them is actually funnier. And likely more effective.

6. For those who aren't aware of it, this is from a movie called "Latter Days"

Which is a great flick -- rent it if you can.

Mormon missionary meets Wes Hollywood gay boy, they kiss, get caught, Mormon boy is excommunicated -- by his father -- then boy finds boy again and they live happily ever after.

I love the move -- very tender at times and very funny at other times -- and it gives you a little glimpse into the Mormon mindset.

Of course, I also politely tell them that I'm not buying the rubbish they're selling.

Missionaries are trained as salesmen. They don't really understand the religion well enough to get into some kind of theological debate and they're taught to avoid that at all costs. Unlike Christian churches, the Mormon religion doesn't disclose all the facts about the faith until the deal is closed. I cannot think of any other religion except for Scientology that has this practice of not disclosing all the facts before a person converts. Sorry about the rant, guys, but they really yank my chain.

Remember, if you just slam the door in their face, you've freed them up to make another sales pitch to someone else. Think about it.

When they knock on your door, be more than "nice" to them. Don't just send them away. Invite them in. But, instead of listening to their message, give them your message.

Inform them that their church is going against the Constitution and try to deprive others of Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. Ask them to point out where Jesus (or Joseph Smith) said that gays cannot marry.

Most of these kids have never heard the other side. You can change their lives, and the lives of others around them.

Maybe we should get some of the good writers on DU to put together an "elevator speech".
