New Dem Ad In Georgia -- Which Backed McCain -- Hits Chambliss For Not Backing Obama

By Eric Kleefeld - November 17, 2008, 11:18AM

Jim Martin, the Georgia Democrat who has an outside shot at picking off GOP Sen. Saxby Chambliss in the upcoming runoff election, has a new ad with a very interesting strategy for a red-state Dem: Aggressively tying himself to Barack Obama and attacking the Republican for not supporting the new president-elect.

"No wonder he opposes the Obama economic recovery plan," the announcer says -- in a state that voted 52%-47% for John McCain.

The rub here is that this runoff is similar in many ways to a special election, which is all about mobilizing the base. And Martin sees here an opportunity to capitalize on Obama's honeymoon period in order to get Democratic voters out to the polls for a second time.

Chambliss should still be viewed as the frontrunner, but not by much -- a recent http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/11/13/114615/18/645/660407">Research 2000 poll has him leading Martin by only 49%-46%. If Martin can effectively leverage economic uncertainties plus the Obama honeymoon into a better base turnout than Chambliss can use right-wing anger at Obama's win, he could very plausibly pull this thing off.

isn't he curious what a recession is, especially now when everyone is talking about it?

6. 52%-47%??!
Hokey smokes! I had no idea Georgia did THAT well for Obama! That is fantastic!!

Go Martin! Since it looks like I won't be getting an absentee ballot to vote in the run-off, all I can do is send him good vibrations and my prayers.

8. The issue is whether or not...
...African American voters return to the polls in the numbers they did in the general election...doubtful. For whatever reason PrezElect Obama has not committed to coming to town in support of Martin. Bill Clinton will be here this week but clearly he ain't Barack. Another point to overcome is that the reason they're having a runoff at all is that the Libertarian candidate pulled 5% of the vote meaning that Chambliss didn't get a majority. If those folks decide to come back out it's doubtful that they'll vote Democratic...then again there was a reason they voted for the Lib candidate in the first place - particularly since Bob Barr, the Libertarian Candidate for Prez didn't come close to the 5% the Senate guy did and Barr's from Georgia. Point being they, the Libs, weren't happy with either Chambliss, or the Republicans, or both, the first time around so maybe they'll just stay at home.

The biggest issue is that 'This is Georgia Mister' where red is red and even the BlueDogs are more red than purple.

9. my theory (which might be wrong): This state is very red and very racist
Not as racist as Alabama or MI, but still enough that 22% of dems voted for McCain. I would LOVE for Obama to come to Georgia, but I fear he would rile up the republicans who are furious about losing.

Bill Clinton can reach white democrats and maybe independents in a state like this better than Obama could.
