1. Were never going to stop hearing about.. |
|
That one old lady who had her cross torn out of her hands, are we? And that somehow compares to the violence and discrimination faced by the GLBT community everyday in this country?
Tell you what, Mike. You provide a few examples of "Christian bashing" and I'll provide you with a few examples of gay bashing's that happen almost daily in this country.
Idiot.

2. separation of marriage and state? |
|
Edited on Wed Nov-19-08 11:40 AM by nuncvendetta
well he's right insofar that individual civil liberties and the institution of marriage is separable, unlike race-based civil rights were back in the day. The problem right now is that marriage has not been separated from the act of unions. The government should get out of the business of offering up, legitimizing, or validating marriage, period. It should have one official civil rights category known as "unions," in which every possible combination of sexual orientation can partake. Then - if people want to go to their specific churches and whatever to get church-specific "marriages" that have no bearing on anything outside of the church, then fine. It can be like baptism. As a heterosexual couple, I'm disappointed that everyone considers that marriage will be our default state of being when I do get married. I don't want to be pigeonholed into something that homosexuals can't have. Why can't we have civil unions as the default state, and then we can individually elect to get "traditional marriages" within the scope of our church so that society at large can pinpoint the bigots from the not.
As it stands, on the altar I think my fiancee and I are going to make a statement bemoaning the fact that everyone cannot partake in the act that we are about to. I have attended other heterosexual weddings that have done this, and it was quite moving. It's our wedding, so we might as well take the opportunity to use the bully pulpit.

3. There is basically a single difference... |
|
....between racial civil rights and gay civil rights struggles. It is this.
One can pretend to be straight.
That's it.
It is much harder to pretend to be white if your skin is dark. That makes it easier to tell someone to use the colored entrance or to refuse to serve them at the lunch counter. In those times, if you were outed, you lost much the same way as blacks lost. It wasn't quite as institutionalized because, being able to fake heterosexuality, society could pretend the Gay just didn't exist. Not so for people of color.
When I was growing up, only hair dressers and decorators were gay. No gay football players, or contractors or congressmen. Oh no! Gays were rare unfortunates suffering from a disease. Alas, Negroes were just... born that way!:eyes:
This is the only difference. Gay marriage is a civil right issue, just like the 1950's and 60's civil rights issues.... but for this one difference.

5. Really Mike? Tell that to Matthew Shepard's parents |
|
It all comes down to believing that everyone is equal in the eyes of the law Mike. That's it. Do you believe the Constitution is for giving people rights or taking them away?

I think Mike Huckabee is well-intentioned and a decent man.
BUT...
would somebody please explain to this jackass that the whole "re-defining an insititution" argument was the same argument used against getting rid of miscegenation laws? Your INTERPRETATION of the institution does not equal the NATURE of the institution, Governor.

Oh yes, Mr. Huckabee is absolutely right, gays deserve basic civil rights like...not being lynched, or stoned, or dragged, or hung on a barbed wire fence...ya know basic things like that. Yes, according to these "fine god fearing" folk, they have the right to exist, but thats just about it.
Huckabee is an ass! Gays are one of the largest groups facing discrimination, throughout the world. Gays are all nationalities, religions, colors, races, sexes professions etc. Because one lousy prick knocks a cross out of an old woman's hand, there is suddenly a massive violent rebellion by the fascist, secular gays (as that fat walrus Gingrich would have you believe). But when the mormons and other christians come along and spew words like fag and queer and go out and actively bash gays, there just good god fearing folk peacefully protesting. GIVE ME A BREAK!
P.S. To the catholic church: you are just a massive establishment of closeted homosexuals. Think about it people, have you ever seen the pope and his papal entourage all gussied up in those FABULOUS vestments of mauves and burgundies and gold and lets not forget those Prada shoes!
