Commentary on Tonight's SNL sketch on the Congressional Hearings with the Detroit CEOs. As of this posting, NBC has not yet posted the Detroit sketch on their website (but some of the other content from the show is up there as I write this.)

1. chapter 11 is a horrific idea
If you don't understand why it's enough to know that all the right wingers are advocating for it, that should be enough to give you a second thought. The first thing that happens in a chapter 11 is the corporate raid of employee pensions, a long time dream of the rightards. The second of course the layoffs and the subsequent destruction of the UAW, another 1 on their wish list. We democrats cannot allow it to happen, not only because of the union but also the ripple effects of such mass layoff in the real economy. What we should do is the urgent stop on GM jobs being outsourced to Russia and Brazil and a massive retooling of the industry under gov appointed new management; a retooling similar to WW2 in its scope but 4 green technology this time.

Although he links to liberal sites, he gives some mixed signals.

I haven't yet bothered to ck his other postings here on DU; one can often get a clearer understanding of a poster's 'leanings' by doing that. Perhaps later, when I'm not as busy.

:hi:

on edit: I see that he's cleared up the misunderstanding regarding the mug below.

3. Grrr... They still haven't posted the skit.
In my haste, I didn't read the comment and went looking for the video. It still isn't there.

While searching, I watched some of the other skits and they were not very funny IMHO. Boy, politics were a real blessing to SNL because the other skits are just not making me laugh. Not even the one on Arrian Huffington. I watched the Clear Rite commercial and it actually made no sense for so many reasons and the turkey bit was just so lame. Oh well, I won't be watching too much this season.

Now I think that I have officially spent too much time discussing the latest episode of SNL. :)

23. The Sketch
I don't think they will ever post the sketch. My guess is that Loren Michaels is in a LOT of hot water with their advertisers, because they pretty much said that every car Detroit makes is a Lemon.

24. Yeah, you might be right. I guess that pissing off
politicians and celebrities is one thing, but pissing off your advertisers is completely different. You could make the argument that they may have made fun of everybody and it is just SNL so that the auto makers should just get over it and not take things so seriously. However, it is becoming clearer that SNL does have the power to shape the public's opinions.

4. Nice GOP mug...
You should also wear your "I :loveya: Nazi" T-shirt and matching Jack Boots. Democrats love that sort of regalia.

14. Mug
If you look closely, you can see a democratic mug next to it, which is mostly hidden behind my rather large head. It's a matched set that was given to me by a friend, which serves to remind me that all Republicans are not idiots (think Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt.)

But, I still question your very anti-labor views.

19. Mr. Britehorn's views are not necessarily anti-Labor
My view is to support a bailout with a revamp of management: Rick Wagoner should never run an auto company again. With the level of incompetency and arrogance he displayed in his tenure at GM, the only thing he's fit for is a cabinet post in the Bush Junta. Since the junta leaves power in just eight weeks, he's not going to get one of those.

Without such a proviso attached to federal aide to the auto industry, we are conflated as to whether we should hand more cash to companies that are staying afloat by burning cash (we taxpayers will never see those dollars again) or put a few million people out of work for the incompetence of fuck ups like Wagoner. That's a real Hobson's choice.

I say turn the auto companies into co-operatives. After watching the American auto companies build gas guzzlers in the face of peak oil, global climate change and rising pump prices for thirty years after Chrysler was bailed out, I am absolutely convinced that assembly line workers can design, build and market a better car than Harvard MBAs and Yale lawyers.

If this is socialism, let us make the most of it.

Complete with his RW union busting views and his elephant mug in the background...

(And as an aside, why is he being given a blog at BraveNewFilms?)

18. Yikes
As I said earlier in this talk back, the elephant mug is part of a Democratic/Republican set that are sitting behind my big head. As to the Union thing, I live in a Union household--but that doesn't mean I'm brain dead. Unions have a very big, very important role to play in our workplace, but they can't protect their workers from the gross incompetence of management. If the big three are going to drive their companies into the ground, I really don't think the American taxpayers should have to bail them out--unless they manage to produce a figure like Lee Iacocca who can convince Congress that the money will be paid back and not wasted.

go to his website and check out some of the puppet skits they are funny and make you think. we are all entitled to our opinions. stop attacking and if you have a meaningful discussion, start your own thread. that is what we are here for to learn and share, not to attack and put down.

10. Sorry - I totally agree - NO BAILOUT!
Do not give these assholes one red cent!!!

They've proven they can't handle OUR money!

Yes - something must be done to help these worker transition to new employment, but if you take a risk and work for a fucked-up company, then you unfortunately pay the price.

If you give these corporate assholes OUR money, like I'm sure we're gonna do after all, unfortunately, these same assholes who got us to this place in the first place WILL STILL BE IN THE POSITIONS OF POWER TO REMAKE ALL THEIR HORRIBLE CORPORATE DECISIONS AGAIN!

No Thanks.

Chapter 11 will not be a BAD thing. It will force these asshole OUT, and they will have NOTHING to "give" for THEIR "golden parachutes"...and that will be a GOOD thing!

You can't keep all the "perks" of a bankrupt company - sorry, that's just not the way it works...

11. Part of me agrees... However, I'm convinced this is being set up
to be the final straw that breaks the backs of the unions. I think the RW is manipulating it to be that final strike (pardon the pun).

26. Full sketch on youtube
At least it was when I posted this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_oCdHNrbvc4

but NBC may have taken it down for copyright violation.

Glad to have seen it! I'm sure it's not on the website as advertisers would hate it.
