Noam Chomsky: "What Next? The Elections, the Economy, and the World"

World-renowned public intellectual Noam Chomsky discussed the meaning of President-Elect Barack Obama's victory and the possibilities ahead for real democratic change at a speech last week in Boston. It was his first public appearance since the election. Chomsky has been a professor of linguistics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for over a half-century and is the author of dozens of influential books.

1. Listened respectfully, but disagree with his views

Bitter old men don't change the world. This one will do little more than irritate others without culturing any pearls of substance. For someone who supposedly is well-regarded in the use of language, he is a horrible communicator. And as for predicting McCain would win, how'd that turn out good sir?

4. I agree his communication speaking skills are terrible..
He speaks so softly it is as if he's apologetic for what he's saying, or afraid to
'speak out!' with enough volume and projection to be heard and understood.

Or, he's bored with the whole thing and whispers his speeches as a joke on his
followers as they strain ears and mind to hear and understand what he has to say.

5. very bitter ...
Earlier this year he gave an interview in which he criticized OBAMA as being "corporate" and Obama's book as being "inspirational in tone only" ... It was obvious to me that Noam hadn't read Obama's book "The Audacity of Hope" ... so I emailed him and called him on it ... sure enough ... he replied that he had not read the book but only thumbed through it and it "appeared" to him to be inspirational only ... he hadn't read it at all ... he's become intellectually lazy, bitter, and uninterested in anything other then his own narrow view ... he's done ... marginalized by his own rhetoric ...

2. Chomsky gets it right as usual
Of course those drinking the Obama kool-aid will not buy into it. Our current bailout of the financial markets with our children's and grandchildren's money is exactly the wrong thing to do, to bring about real change in this country. Yes, we will go into a deep depression without the bailouts and many will suffer great hardship, but we were the ones who allowed it to happen. Real social change in health care, job security, and government leadership could occur if we bailout on the bailout, instead of propping up the continued undemocratic system. Instead it looks like we will just take money away from future generations to continue things as they are, and guarantee a worse future for the lower and middle classes.

Totally agree. As for the "old man" thing, Chomsky will stay light years ahead of 99.9% of the human race during his death rattle.

8. Kucinich gave it a try
If we stopped propping up this plutocracy now, with our kids money, Americans would be forced to face the music. Millions of Americans would be ready to accept change, just like in the 30's depression.
Someone like Kucinich, could become a lot more acceptable. Of course, we might have to burn FOXnews to the ground.
