3. I loved Cat in the seventies, and I love him now.
The only way he seems to have changed is in that he appears to have deepened in peaceful, kind wisdom.

5. Salman Rushdie would forcefully and, I think, justifiably disagree with you. n/m

7. Well, I don't know how he could possibly have been misconstrued, but you be the judge.

Cat Stevens Gives Support To Call for Death of Rushdie
By CRAIG R. WHITNEY

LONDON, May 22 -- The musician known as Cat Stevens said in a British television program to be broadcast next week that rather than go to a demonstration to burn an effigy of the author Salman Rushdie, ''I would have hoped that it'd be the real thing.''

The singer, who adopted the name Yusuf Islam when he converted to Islam, made the remark during a panel discussion of British reactions to Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini's call for Mr. Rushdie to be killed for allegedly blaspheming Islam in his best-selling novel ''The Satanic Verses.'' He also said that if Mr. Rushdie turned up at his doorstep looking for help, ''I might ring somebody who might do more damage to him than he would like.''

''I'd try to phone the Ayatollah Khomeini and tell him exactly where this man is,'' said Mr. Islam, who watched a preview of the program today and said in an interview that he stood by his comments.

8. He has explained it many times since then...
Edited on Sat Nov-29-08 09:59 AM by hlthe2b
But, every time there is a Cat Stevens post someone interjects with this and refuses to believe otherwise. I don't have time to dig up all the references, but they are out there if you are not one who refuses to consider that there might be an alternative conclusion.

14. ''I would have hoped that it'd be the real thing.''
How exactly does one "explain" that?

Anything less than "I was wrong and I apologize" is pure bullshit.

9. In Howlerville
We are still and will continue to boycott Cat Stevens.
I really do not understand how anyone of conscience can do anything less.
I remember when Yusuf said those comments about Salman Rusdie and the death edict called for by Khomeini.
I will never forget.
Quite frankly I am shocked and a little dismayed at the support some people have expressed here of Cat Stevens.

13. LOL!!!
Makes no difference to me! You can buy some Ted Nugent while your at it. Fascism's all the same in the end.And anyone supporting it in any of its forms or ignoring it isn't worth the effort. And trying to rewrite history isn't going to work either. I remember very clearly when 'Cat Stevens" spewed out that hateful judgment towards another artist and his freedom of expression. And there isn't a publicist or an image consultant in the world thats gonna change that fact. Unfortunately for you and "Cat" the truth can be inconvenient.IGNORE all you want. It isn't going to change a damn thing.

16. yes!
for those of us who want the world to be a good place should help out those that are doing something....and not those that formulate to their advantage an old hearsay debunked news stories. I believe Mr. Yusuf Islam has shown his willingness to appreciate being a human, first and foremost. I think those that still think he's a terrorist sympathizer would want defend themselves called on the same, or even better: "stupid ignorant asshats".
