Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has bumbled and fudged his way through a good two months worth of press conferences, op-ed pieces, and congressional hearings, his repute declining precipitously among first Democrats and then Republicans. With Gonzales scheduled to return to Capital Hill on Thursday, May 10 to testify before the House Judiciary Committee, the question on everyone’s mind seems to be, “What in the world is it going to take to get this guy fired??”

In today’s episode of TPMtv, we answer that question. As a Tuesday McClatchy piece so aptly put it, "In order to get fired in the Bush administration, you need to have hatchet in hand, the corpse in front of you, your fingerprints all over the handle and a photograph of the act in progress." And in the case of Alberto Gonzales, maybe a written confession to the murder, just to be sure.

Or maybe it just isn't bad enough (hard to believe) yet to force W to want to push a new AG through the Dems. You know that would get very very ugly. The burner is on about a 7 or 8. If it gets to 9 I think even W will be forced to push him out (i.e. Gone-zales will resign) and then talk about the spirit of bi-partisanship in getting a new AG in place.

As a country, we need a new AG immediately. As a political matter, it might be better for the Dems to have AG still dangling in the wind.
