He is the one thing that may convince me to get HBO, just to catch his show every week, rather than highlights.

7. I know ex-pats in France and he is absolutely right-on about their health care. |
|
America needs to wake the f*ck up and understand how backwards this country is in denying national health care to its citizens, if for no other reason than a healthy population is a productive population.
It's good to see Sean Penn laughing. :)

9. Sean Penn sure seemed to be enjoying it, |
|
but, is it just me, or did Harold Ford Jr. not seem to think it was all that funny? A couple of the cutaways to him showed him with a slight smirk or bemused look on his face, but no real smile and he seemed to be looking at the audience as though he was thinking, "huh, they all agree with this, or think this is funny?"
Personally, I thought it was great. I can't stand all the French bashing that goes on these days and I love that Maher called them on it.

11. Ford is a DLC honcho... |
|
This is he is a republican lite for all intents and purposes, he has no problem talking about Democratic mea culpas, but when it comes to say something remotely confrontational about the GOP he insist that is not nice and we should do this and that... As far as I am concerned he should have switched political affiliations long ago, he was too lame to even fight all the smears that the GOP ran in the Tenn campaign (the fact that miscegenation innuendos worked in the XXI century speaks volumes about the South). He is much like a battered wife, still making excuses about her husband (the GOP attacks) abuse, while expressing plenty of self hate (It must be the Dems fault).

he's VERY Repub-lite. I heard him on a public radio show just a couple weeks ago talking about the Dem debate and some of the stuff he said - well, I wasn't impressed. And I was aware of it before, but to hear him talk...well, it just really made it clear.

12. All the French people I've ever known have been really nice |
|
I didn't experience anything in Paris that isn't typical of any big city (NYC, London,) and the provinces in France are some of the most hospitable places on earth -- sometimes when people knee-jerk bash France I call them on what bad experiences they had with French people or France and it always ends up being, "oh everybody KNOWS how they are!"
Go Bill!

14. I agree completely. The French are understandably proud of their language and |
|
amazing culture and food. They have every right to be! But we live in a big city and routinely meet people much ruder than anyone we met in France. And I've been there three times. I tell you, a smile, patience, and willingness to learn at least a few phrases in French will get you a long way.
I think the other thing most people don't understand is just *how many* people visit France (Paris especially) every year. I live in Chicago, and it has its fair share of tourists, but it's nothing compared to the influx of people going to all the museums and attractions in Paris. I would get pretty cranky myself if I was constantly bombarded by throngs of tourists everywhere I went, when I was just trying to go to the store or work or to meet friends. Not that we even met many cranky folks in our travels there, but it sure would be understandable, you know? I think sometimes people forget that just because they're on vacation and have a flexible timetable doesn't mean everyone else is too.

I love Paris. The food is great, the wine is wonderful, the people are friendly and helpful and there is a museum on every corner. What's not to like?
