Wow looks like a great film. As a Kansan, I can tell you it sure looks pretty accurate.

1. i grew up in small-town kansas...and those last two guys reminded me...
of the kind of people i knew...even the 'conservatives' in our area were mostly old-school, pre-Reagan style conservatives...and the whole fundamentalist religious quackery was barely evident...

our county was heavily agricultural...and most farmers just wanted to not have the government 'sticking its nose' in their business...that was the level of their political involvement...they were wheat growers, not being paid 'not to grow'...

i was not surprised to see the initial segment centered around wichita...it has always been a rightwing sort of place...lots of military-government-related industry, oil, gas and cattle...

we used to joke that our hometown was 'fluteville'...wichita was 'flutropolis'...kansas city was 'flutopia'...

2. I have lived here all my life
except for a decade or so on the MO side of KC. And you are correct.

I grew up in the city and had a rude awakening when I went to college in Emporia. I hadn't really known any conservatives. At least not like the farmers in Kansas.

But Frank hits a key point. They were conservatives but many of them were also Democrats. Glickman served 9 terms in Congress. And he represented a very conservative district in Kansas. Then the talibornagains took over and it all went to shit.

I am anxious to see the movie. It looks great.

4. my brother, who was a true kansas radical...probably more into trotsky than ike...
worked as a political 'activist' for dems all through the 70's through the early '90s...worked with glickman and tom docking, trying to stall the flood of rightwing crazies that they could see coming...

the history of kansas is fascinating....the cauldron that spilled into the civil war...prairie populism...william allen white's 'emporia gazette'...

speaking of the emporia area, my brother would 'hide out' on a farm down by madison, among the flint hills...we'd go pond fishing and prairie walking and relax...
