Ray Kurzweil posits that we need only invent a machine capable of self-repair and reproduction and we have created the next dominant species, and will have rendered ourselves obsolete.
"The Age of Spiritual Machines" is well worth the read. Also, "The Physics of Immortality" by Frank Tipler.

It's been obvious for a few years that things have been picking up speed exponentially, but until you see the figures being put together in a presentation like that you don't realize quite how fast.
