1. Will we the people ever truly be represented by |
|
the people we supposedly elect? It's a known fact that the US tortured people. Period, end of sentence. Will there ever be an accounting of it in a court of law, where the guilty are confronted with the evidence of their crimes and prosecuted and sentenced if convicted? Not unless we the people who's money supports these governments make it so it won't.

that the press here takes more of a notice and starts covering it in more real terms instead of abstract debates about safety.

As Glenn Greenwald so superbly described it on Bill Moyer's Journal last night, the friggin' corporate press in the country DO NOT want to expose the crimes of Bush & Criminals because it'd make them LOOK STUPID (and lying to boot, all this time). The god damned press is as guilty as they are by covering this stuff up! Time to drop the foolish notion the "press" is coming to the rescue- it ain't happening. THE ONLY WAY THIS GETS TRACTION IS IF YOU GET ACTIVATED! That woman had more nerve and courage than MOST of the big he men pussies in THIS country. Fuck health care, the economy, gas costs or whether you're going to get your damned digital converter box before the switchover. YOU LET THIS DROP AND LET THESE CRIMINALS GO OFF INTO THE WILD BLUE YONDER, YOU'RE DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE FUTURE. It's time to get MAD, people... and MEAN.

3. Give me more people being "emotional" about torture!!! Love Shami--!!! |
|
Violence is always dumb and stupid -- if not in the short run, then in the long run.
And we have to find a way to control the violent among us.
Just before Bush was shoved into the WH by the Gang of 5 on the SC, the United Nations
was getting reading to begin deal with aggression.
We need to get back to that kind of thinking about controlling aggression.
And those who aid and abet it!

that most, if not all, of the detainees have been tortured. They say things like, "Oh, losing a little sleep or listening to music you don't like isn't torture." They just don't get it and I really think it's because they don't WANT to know.

that they still believe in the myth of a free press.
People think if there were really something wrong in America the press would
be telling us! Look at all those laughing people on TV . . . could they possibly
be not telling us about Global Warming, Peak Oil, political violence over decades???
Corruption at high levels of government and police enforcement?
Yep --- !!
(But, of course, we're seeing NOTHING like this on our TVs today!
There was a brief period during the civil rights era when we did hear a few things,
but it didn't go on very long.)

22. I would call it barbarism, |

but that would be an insult to barbarians. Sick shit.
What no one ever talks about is the fact that the lovely, lovely, people who did this walk amoung us, as well as those that ordered it. We have been driven so far to the right that somehow these people are supposed to be 'reached out to' in the name of 'balance?'
If that is what it takes to keep winning, count me the fuck out. These people are war criminals of the highest order. I don't want my President to deal with these people. I want him to lock them up!
I can't imagine ANYONE actually believing we had the moral authority to do shit like this. Sorry to rant. It's just that when I hear of these abuses I see red.

29. The people who did this |
|
are infinitely worse than Bin Laden. There's no place on this planet for them. At the very least, they should not be allowed to breed.
We should, we must, reopen Nuremburg, try and convict Cheney and Bush, and every single person involved, down to the soldiers and the foreign "assets". Following orders is only less of a crime than giving orders.
This case is the unwanted consequence which disproves the assertion "military is valid".
The most maddening thing about the video is the woman from her name is ethnically on the other side of the fence from the muslims, yet all the bloody minded sociopath british neocon could do was snigger and misogynistically patronize her. I was so glad to see him skewered in the last shot.
No pity for these people. Get rid of them all. Send them to an island. Send them off-planet.
Sigh. I know the real problem is exactly that kind of extreme reaction. We need to deal with them and their crimes appropriately though. An island, at least, and not a nice one.

do to other humans and the levels of depravity they are willing to sink to. It's beyond understanding. I've read the studies about the people of Germany in the 40's and I wonder if I would have gone along with them or like a small minority, I would have fought back. I hope it would be the latter.

situation is further accelerated and it's just too late. You're trapped.
Kind of like dealing with the Mafia.
I never had any sympathy for the German people -- Why, How could they have
let this go on?
After Bush/Cheney, I can better understand how it begins to happen.
As I say this, I think the American people have already waited too long to confront
fascism that has already crossed our thresh-hold.
Explaining man's inhumanity to man . . . ?
I think you have asked the hard questions we have probably all asked ourselves at one
time or another.
I can readily see that frightened men who hate create these systems of torture --
and they do it when they reach the top of the heap. In churches, in government.
But they are "systems" which are put together piece by piece over time.

A thoughtful post, sir/madam, and thank you for it.
There are two sentences I would highlight. They are epiphanous in nature and partially answer a fundamental question I have had for some time. Who are, and how do they get to the point where they are willing to torture, the people responsible for a willingness to torture their own kind. ******************************************************************
"I can readily see that frightened men who hate create these systems of torture --

But they are "systems" which are put together piece by piece over time.
************************************************************************* If one 'walks' backward from the 'top of the heap' to children torturing small animals, the 'bottom of the heap', so to speak, is there a connection? The FBI has many investigative tools, not the least of which is profiles of deviants. I wonder if they have information that could be made available to the public that would advance understanding in this perplexing and deadly misadventure as a useful societal tool.
If those who believe torture should be used, ought not they be made to declare so? How does the CIA know where to set up facilities in those countries/places where, in a few hours, they can 'rendition' a person they want tortured? Are different torture methods specific by location?
Too many questions, essentially no answers. Boys will be boys and, sadly, humans will be humans - the only species that kills their own kind, and tortures, for pleasure.

18. I asked myself that when I was a child and I knew the answer. |
|
That's why I do the things I do every day. If someone had told me ten or fifteen years ago that I'd be going to DC and talking to Senators and Congressmen, going to their local offices and not leaving until we either get arrested or they agree to meet with us, standing on the street with signs twice a week no matter what the weather is, writing letters constantly, talking to groups, making sure our high school follows the law regarding opt out forms and recruiters, being a very active CodePinker and actually telling my congressman what I expect him to do face to face on a regular basis, not being allowed to attend a speech by that creepy General Hayden, I'd have told them that they were nuts. But a few years ago I had to ask myself the same questions I did about the Germans and I just couldn't allow what bushco did to all those innocent people to be done in my name without making sure it was in the public record that I opposed them and tried every way I could to stop them. All my life I wondered why the German people didn't DO something and hoped that if I'd been there I'd have tried, and when it came time to do it, I had no choice but to be active and vocal.

21. Lots of Germans tried to help.... |
|
but it was late in the game when the truth came out and by then there were really only women and children left. Lots of Germans who helped were also sent to the camps and gassed along with the others. Don't forget that world war 2 was a bit different from our 'war on terror.'
Not that that's an excuse that they didn't do more, but the country was totally fucked, people were really starving in the streets and children lost at least one --if not both parents!
I myself lost all male members of my family and by the end of the war, I had my mother and two aunties...and I was lucky.
We have the means to do everything right! We have good examples of what not to do--but our enemy is complacency, too many comforts and distractions to keep us away from the hard issues. And the powers that be designed it this way, for sure! And we blame the media--rightfully--but we are taking steps and that's the real crux of the matter! What you young guys and gals are doing is the right thing--never stop--pass the message on--be involved--help Obama by keeping the right pressure on him too! He asks for it--give it to him! There! K&R
