4. This rewriting the history |

of the Great Depression, and FDR, is the modern day equivalent of the Nazi book burning. And they are framing the argument in their favor using a complicit media. Remember, no one is hearing our side unless they are watching Rachel and Olbermann. Many Americans will be repeating these Reich Wing talking points on FDR. I think it stinks to high heaven.
How about restoring the fairness doctrine so we have a chance.

5. I suppose what Steele was trying to say in an inept, maladroit way |
|
is that the stimulus package includes "make work" -- that is, jobs that are created just to meet some sort of quota or simply to satisfy some government stipulation, only to be dissolved once the current crisis is over. I'm surprised George didn't catch this, but maybe that was by design.
I believe, however, that even employees who know that their jobs are going to be short term can still be engaged in necessary, meaningful work. Consider all the women who entered the workforce during WWII as munitions makers. Their jobs were by definition temporary, but they went to work when they were needed, where they were needed. We could do this sort of thing again.

6. Please provide some examples of "make work" jobs. |
|
It appears that you are saying that these jobs that will be created are really just government doles. Is improving the infrastructure a make work job that has no useful purpose other than getting the person off welfare. I don't see it that way, but help me out.

8. if you listen to what Steele said |
|
he's defining a job as "something only a business owner creates." This is how republicans think yet they don't want us to see that our government is definitely in business. A business creates a 'demand' for a product. Now what products can you think of that our federal government has created a demand for? Pharmaceutical, weaponry and most important DEBT. Yes government can creat 'jobs' as Rachel pointed out. Steele is using the doublespeak again as all republicans do.

9. The stimulus won't do much |
|
Not because it's too small in size. It's largely throwing money in a million different directions that won't create nearly the 3 million temporary jobs to hold people over until the economy improves. I could get into a very, very lengthy discussion with many details and stats that would bore the crap out of everyone. Instead, let's keep it very elementary: we got into this mess by creating too much debt and spending more money than we have. So the answer is to create more debt and more spending when the bubbled market corrects as it should? Equilibrium. What goes up on fake growth, must come crashing down.
If the govt is going to be spending this ridiculous amount of money, shouldn't we be getting something of true value from it? A good return on investment? That is not what's in this stimulus bill. How about infrastructure that decreases our dependence on oil and improves public transportation? That's virtually nonexistent in this stimulus bill.

But that's not what this is about. First you have to jolt the economy. People aren't spending so government has to..to get liquidity going. It is a spending bill after all. Then you have to create new businesses. Start providing products in this country that can be purchased here aiding job production..getting people back to work. As businesses begin to show profit they must reinvest in their business to grow and sustain. Obama stated last night that no longer can we be a nation of just consumer spending. That party is over. Now we have to get back to basics. Remake the economy. He doesn't say we will bypass what is coming. We'll have to go through it but if we remake how our economy works now, the future doesn't have to be bleak for our kids and grandkids. This is his message. The government can help to soften the blow but not avert it. We have a debt that is 350% of our GDP. Worse than in '29 when it was at 264%. That won't change in a year or even two. Iceland's debt was 800% of it's GDP and Great Britain is worse than ours so this is a global mess. If we do nothing we are guaranteed a long depression. I don't like it but that's where we are.
I believe the President has got the right idea for the long sustainable run. Meanwhile he is trying to help us who are already suffering by increasing unemployment insurance..giving aid in food stamps etc. There will be more spending programs coming..this is just the first of many as they see where the greatest need is. There is a plan for green energy coming.
