4. See! I knew why I want to marry my partner, so we can be rich together. |
|
Really Suzy, you're starting to sound a little like an opportunist. Making the most out of your money is a "birthright?"

While Orman is a pain in the ass sometimes, she's making another logical argument on the second and three class citizens' rights of homosexuals.
Gay marriage should be allowed for every reason, as well as what Orman says. She just takes it out of the political and puts it into the economic.

15. Of course you're correct. |
|
Finance is her thing. Reaping the benefits that married couples are entitled to is certainly something we all think about. Somehow her making a point that tax breaks are a birthright just sounded a little Republican to me.

ANY one group of people get so many more benefits than the others?

16. The point is, single people are not involved in the finances of another person. |
|
The point being made is that because married usually combine their finances, there should be a benefit to each for doing so.

17. Kind of makes my point. Married people have the benefit |

of two incomes and two sets of families to help out. Not so with single people.

7. Beautiful. I have a number of gay neighbors. I am not gay, |
|
love them each of them. In each case, my neighbors have lived as couples for a number of years -- and in harmony. They are the best neighbors in the world. I don't think it is fair that they have to pay a higher tax rate than I do or that other straight people in their same situation pay.

8. What was her argument for how marriage is economically advantageous? |
|
How do people save money by being married? Just curious.

Well she was talking about what forms a person has to fill out to protect their partner, and part of it is that a gay person doesn't have the same rights if they die - they have to go through other measures to protect their partner - she is an advocate of a living revocable trust rather than a will - and I don't know the exact details of what needs to be filled out (she has them free on her website - she mentioned it in the show today) but I am sure one needs to jump through more hoops to leave your assets to an unmarried partner than a married partner.
I would expect there might be tax breaks - but I don't know for sure. She did mention how a spouse is eligible for part of your social security - I would guess that would be one.

"Married, filing jointly" generally is has lower total tax than two "single" persons. It actually depends on how much each person makes.
Suppose one person in a marriage makes $100,000 per year, and the other one $20,000. They combine incomes and pay as if each makes $60,000. So the marginal rate is lower at $60,000 and money is saved.
This doesn't work out exactly, I don't think, but that is the general idea. If two single people make close to the same income, I think it might actually HURT them economically to get married. So, there is a marriage "penalty" for some people. That's just as ridiculous. That happened when they were trying to correct for the advantage married people have.
Look at the tax rates and it comes down to being an individual matter.

13. I was disappointed that the lede into this wonderful rant wasn't also on the clip. |
|
I had fallen asleep on the couch and had just woken up right as this segment began, so I'm a little groggy about the figures. But she was talking about benchmark savings that REALLY added up over time for married couples. It should have been included in this clip. I'll see if I can find a better link on youtube that will include it.
Nope. Can't find one. For what it's worth, I do know that Suze Orman is openly gay, so this is an issue that is certainly very personally important to her. Sorry I can't find the whole segment. It was pretty powerful.

Suze (and others) should have the same marriage rights as all the people she gives advice to. I think it's good she's finally saying it on air. I don't think it's opportunistic say something when she gives advice to married people all the time, but is not allowed to get married to her partner, herself.
Her personality is different and takes a bit of getting used to - but I love her show after watching it a few times, and really enjoy her personality now - now I don't miss it. She really seems to care about the people she talks to on the show.
