I'm an atheist and fully understand Phelps philosophy. If you're going to accept the Bible they are probably a bit more in tune than your average modern Christian. However, the group is non-violent. Even going up and mocking them, they aren't going to hit you.

First, that's not their mission. They are just suppose to inform everybody that God hates them, not so they can fix the problem or do anything about them, just because the Bible says we're doomed and they should tell us we're doomed. And secondly, they are hated enough that they'd be abused more than they already are if they were even mildly violent.

Finally, how is anything that guy does a "blow to atheism"?

26. They are quite violent. Phelps and several of his children have

been convicted of assault, battery, threats, etc. Phelps is a very sick man who indoctrinated his children into his disgusting cult. He doesn't have a philosophy beyond pure hatred for humankind. A few of his adult children escaped the abuse and have written about what he did to them when they were kids. What they suffered at the hands of Fred Phelps is beyond horrific.

If you feel compelled to counter-protest, just bear in mind that they would like nothing better than for the counter-protest to turn violent so they can sue you (every last one of them is a lawyer) The best thing to do is drown them out by making use of the kind of car stereo that fits in the bed of a pickup truck. 15. We ran them off, from a Marine's funeral, in Grand Blanc, MI

There was a massive turnout of veterans, Rolling Thunder, and concerned citizens, to protect the family from having to be subjected to these bastards. We filled the parking lot and grounds of the funeral home. Fire trucks and ambulances blocked the view from the Home Depot parking lot, across the street, where they were going to set up. Then, the store called the police and charged them with tresspassing. I don't thenk they even got out of their cars, before they gave up and drove off. Later, they were billed for the extra police security. Naturally, they didn't pay up.
