1. Do we have to keep glorifying racist libertarian Randian asshat Ron Paul on this board? |
|
Edited on Sun Feb-22-09 09:42 AM by The Velveteen Ocelot
Yes, he's against the war and the "war on drugs." Good for him. Otherwise he's opposed to everything progressives and liberals believe in. Why does he keep turning up here?

4. if we're going to heal our society, we need to find common ground |
|
face it, 300+ million people aren't going to agree on everything, and there will always be portions of society that one group or another doesn't like.
We need to tolerate differences between one another. That is the very definition of a pluralistic society.

14. And as long as there is intolerance on ANY side |
|
we stare down the path of a civil war.
Sure, racists and homophobes are idiots. I find them no less palatable than you do. But this particular topic isn't racism or homophobia. It's about ending policies that are destroying our society and the country.
Racial and Sexual intolerance can be dealt with through better education, for starters. However, we're not going to get anywhere (except civil war) if both sides refuse to work with one another on one issue because of a disagreement on another.

Ron is a GOP idiot just like the rest except he acknowledges the OBVIOUS... that every thinking person already knows regardless of party....get out of useless occupations and stop the fail War on Drugs. Otherwise he's just as full of bad ideas as any Repug. Hitting two targets the size of the planet does not make him special...except in the out of touch GOP world.

13. Maybe there could be another forum where Ron Paul threads are designated to, same as with the I/P |
|
one. He's just as divisive, it seems.
Just a thought.

2. I know many here don't like Ron Paul, but he makes good sense here |
|
and we here at DU have made many of the same arguments.
So at least on these points, I would say we agree with Paul.
- End the so-called 'war' on drugs and terror.
- Stop with the empire buildings overseas.

21. If you heard the entire interview there are plenty of places where he makes no sense |
|
I watched one of these excerpts and found myself agreeing and defending him last week. ENOUGH I watched the whole thing, and while there are a lot of things he makes points about, he is so Republican in his overall premise of government. If you look at the REALLY far right and the REALLY far left they agree on almost as much as they disagree on, they are opposite sides of the same coin.Google Ron Paul and you will find much to like, but among other things, Dr. Paul thinks that government should not intervene in free market capitalism that the problem is too much regulation of financial markets. He got into that in the full interview. At this time in history, this man is dangerous.

|
He was right in the sense he thought it would occur, but compared to Roubini or Stiglitz, he went completely the opposite way on the cause.

Yes...but he thinks more deregulation is the answer. So he is WRONG...as every other Repug is...about the cause and what to do. Again, embracing the obvious does not a "maverick" make.

I may not agree with all of his ideas, but he does, on occasion, have some very good ones. Imagine, a republican who points out the sickness of the Patriot Act, the Iraq war, the Religious bull shit that runs so rampant in this Country.
As for him being racist and/or homophobic, I'll admit I'm not fully aware of his views or history in regards to that - however, if he IS, that still doesn't invalidate good ideas when he has them. It still doesn't invalidate the fact that he's one of the few that's been willing to occasionally stand up for truth and common sense. Or, for that matter, for the constitution.
Since the election business, I've more or less viewed him as a Republican Dennis Kucinich. The "elite democrats" mock Dennis endlessly, Ron Paul gets the same treatment from the right. But he's willing to be tarred and feathered for speaking up, if it comes to that.
He's earned a certain amount of respect and admiration from me, regardless of his flaws.
(Note: Ron Paul has also been one of the very few to stand against the absurd National ID act)

17. The best way to legalize pot.... |
|
is to make driving under the influence of pot; a serious misedmeanor. So its legal in the home; but you'll get a ticket if you are caught driving under the influence. Just like liquor.
That would give Obama an "out" when he legalizes Pot, by making it "illegal". Capiche?

22. only right on drug policy |
|
The only thing Ron Paul is right about is our drug policy. As far as our "wars" go he is only half right. Iraq is/was a major f-up. I have a different view on Afghanistan though as OBL is in the area and the regime that was in power gave him refuge. We have totally screwed that up though by attacking Iraq without any reason, moral or otherwise.
As for his economic views, well almost everyone saw the current situation coming. But what he sees as the reason behind it ( Too much requlation...wtf) is completely off base. He also believes that the " Cure" is to do nothing and let the economy correct itself. Hoover tried that after the '29 crash. Didn't work then and won't work now. It wasn't till '33 after FDR took office and began all his "socialist" programs that things started to turn around. In the end RP is the stopped clock.... and nothing more.
