And to have Sean be so caring to mention him in that manner was awesome.
And wowwww, how about Dustin Lance Black's acceptance for Best Original Screenplay! LIGHTS OUT!

I'm sure he's thanked his family plenty, and he can do that any time. The message of the film was so important, everyone should hear it.

Which to me, made his acceptance speech ring rather hollow.
Sorry, I'm glad Penn won, but I can't jump on the rah rah bandwagon about his speech when he didn't even thank those closest to him.

Way to shake em up Sean! I only wish more performers of all stripes spoke out. The right wing continues to tell performers to shut up and sing or act. I say if you are driven to perform by your beliefs and your beliefs are noble then speak up, use that pedestal and microphone and raise awareness. I'm very thankful for the John Lennons and Sean Penns of this world. And Bill O'Reilly do me a favor and "shut the fuck up".

Sean Penn is a great actor, and is dead on with his political stances, but he loses some credability with me. I can't sit there and listen to someone who has a history of having such a violent temper preach about peace. It's good that he gets the message out there, but I just think he is more concerned with himself than the topics he actually speaks out for. But, then again, he is an actor.

particularly with children, they deserve to have some temper unleashed on them. Alec Baldwin is a perfect example and I applaud him for decking the photographer snapping pics of he and Kim Basinger bringing home their newborn daughter from the hospital. Same with Lady Di for wanting cameras out of her childrens' faces while on a skiing holiday, although she didn't "deck," she pleaded.
"I just think he is more concerned with himself" sounds straight out of Sean's Hannity's foul mouth. It's rather amusing when such obvious RW talking points are used at DU to try to prove a point.

That's just the way I see it. In order to be a successful actor, you have to be able to self promote. I'm not really knocking him for it, just stating my opinion. Actors and politicians ae not that much different, actors are just better paid.:)

A wingnut friend has used it, even a wingut neighbor. I agree re your actor/politician comparison -- Ronnie Raygun! -- but Sean Penn definitely seems to be one who talks and walks the talk and walk.

I won't dwell on the "violent temper" defense, WorseBeforeBetter has taken care of that. But what is about that temper, which because of you insist he should not "preach" about peace, have to do with being more concerned with himself than the topics he speaks about? Or that he is an actor?
Just shake off those wingnut talking points for one second and THINK about it. What good actor would invite abuse from Hannity, Rush, O'Liely and company? Is that really being more concerned with yourself as an actor? The smart thing would be to do like Brad Pitt or Robert Downey Jr. and the majority of Hollywood stars and stay in the shadows politically.
And that whole ""then again, he is an actor" wingnut routine is so old. Like an actor is some dumb profession that requires no thinking or effort while plumbing, or even just thinking about maybe one day setting up a plumbing shop and getting your license, means you are really really smart.

and celebrities take a lot of crap in having their privacy violated by the papparazzi thugs. A lot of us take being anonymous faces in the crowd and going out in public without incident for granted. If you're famous it all goes away. Yes there is a cost for fame, and whether or not fortune makes up for it is anybody's guess. I tend to doubt it.

Hurricane Katrina and there was Sean Penn in a rowboat trying to save people before the federal govt. got there. He walks the walk and talks the talk. more power to him. He is a great actor, director and activist.

49. Then again, John Lennon(who had also had a violent history) said this: |
|
Edited on Mon Feb-23-09 11:04 PM by Ken Burch
"It is the most violent people who go for love and peace."
You can't demand that people be perfect. What's important is to see your flaws(especially the big flaws like violence)and work to overcome them.
Plus, with Sean Penn, as far as I know the only people he was violent with were the paparazzi(and even then that mostly at least twenty years ago), so can't we argue that his violence, regrettable as it was, is both past tense and no longer pertinent? It's not like the guy has ever pulled a Chris Brown.
After all, peace means getting the currently violent to STOP being violent. The example of those who do so is probably more important than that of those who were never violent and speak out against violence.
