2. The Hughes barge was around since at least mid 70's. |
|
I remember seeing it moored off the Isthmus on Catalina back then.
It was originally used to support the Glomar Explorer in the recovery of a sunken Russian Nuclear Submarine in the pacific, all under the cloak of secrecy.
Looking back at the cover used by the Glomar Explorer, it amazes me how gullible and trusting we are as a nation. It was always a Military Project, and it was hidden in plain sight as a symbol of Capitalism searching for new rewards through minerals in the ocean. Right.
It was later used to support the Stealth Houseboat for the elite members of the Navy, since the Military was now feeding on the deficit spending Reagan was lavishing on the Military at that time.
As Rachel Maddow said, the Cost of Ownership for these things must be immense! I find maintaining my Riding Mower an onerous ordeal, just imagine these albatrosses.

How much for Rachel?
Well, it says Rachel and the Navy's secret ships are for sale, doesn't it?

If Rachel came with the ship, they'd stand a much better chance of selling them... Even lunch with Rachel on deck would be a selling point... :D
