Wanted: Tons of sand for beaches |
|
There is no place in America to get sand from Bahamas and Cuba might need to keep all the sand they have especially with rising sea levels in their future

1. Maybe it is part of Mother Earth's battle to rid herself of this annoying virus called mankind. |

3. Another reason we should keep our troops in the Middle East |
|
We could have Haliburton build a Sand Pipe Line from the Deserts of the Middle East.

4. One question: What is a "Gread Flood"? |
|
Is it a typo or some new slang of which I've yet to encounter?

6. Using Miami as an example isn't the best way to show rising |
|
sea levels. Take it from a Marine Biologist, their erosion problems stem more from the hurricanes that have swept thru, rather than impending doom. Look at the amounts of sand dumped on the coast of south carolina after the hugo aftermath.
I'm not saying that sea level isn't rising. Sea levels rise and fall naturally. In core samples that I studied from Columbia, sc contained sand many levels down. I think that we have a bigger issue is with the depletion of our natural buffering zones due to development mainly... that would be the salt marshes, mangroves, and everglades. These wonderful ecosystems act as a great natural buffer and act as a great cleaning system. Its this loss that man cannot replicate.
And at this point, perhaps we deserve what we get for not paying attention to science and our impact.

7. Good points these barrier islands are important |
|
as habitats and buffers and the sea is retaking them ...and the coral reefs are dying
Sea levels rise and fall naturally ....thats a broad statement so you don't think sea level rises are from CO2 levels rising you think Antartica and Artic are just naturally melting at fast rates...
I think man's negligence to the Earth is the major problem
My gut feeling is the governments and coastal areas know they are going under...its a matter of time...so why even get sand the maps say it all Florida is going under the water...

8. I wasn't just speaking of barrier islands. Half the reason New |
|
orleans has sunk as badly as it has is due to the loss of natural marshes. And it is extremely hard to model these things. We put in many different imputs and factors and every time you tweak one factor, the model changes completely. There are models that I have seen that show the earth going into an ice age. This is the same reason why you see so many different paths proceeding a hurricane's storm.
I would like to use this new movement of Global Warming to look further and explore tangible pollutions we can do something about. Say you take on coal burning power plants... Don't you think that by now the industry has had enough time to add all the sulfur scrubbers and take out the mercury that is spilling from them... but what no one sees is that the law that said to the industry take it out, was extended by Bush-ie with campaign donation buy outs. Did you know that 1 in 6 women are walking with more mercury inside of them that it could detrimentally harm their fetus with mental retardation, organ development, and autism. Did you know that there is not a safe level of mercury in any freshwater fish in the United States. If you eat these fish, you will be harming yourself. So in general we need to get rid of coal, or install the technology that is already here. These companies don't want to invest in solar panels for your home. How do they make money? How do they justify to their stock holders that they are going to encourage business loss. Same with the nuclear power. It is so harmful to build and maintain. We had this river inlet we studied as a point to learn how bad things are. There was a paper mill, steel plant and I think a plastics co. All spilling into this one inlet. Our boat captain used to sit our research boat in the river to clean off the barnacles... this river lead right to the bay and into the ocean. The fish outside of the dead zone, were deformed. Children born in the hospital had a higher rate of mutations (such as growing both female and male organs). These are the places we need to clean and not force other countries to take on. Technology has had its price, and now its giving us cancer, genetic problems, and not much to leave to our children.
There are people who are studying and finding solutions, but when they have a patten a big company swoops in and buys them and the paten out so it won't make it to us. Scientists and engineers even in a college setting are funded by the govt and corporate businesses. I had one professor who could care less what we learned, he was too busy chasing a 5 million dollar grant from NOAA to study core drilling samples. He had to maintain a certain level of funding or our prof. weren't paid. Do you know that someone built a car that worked on water only? He died in a plane accident, but there a few trying to simulate his designs. Do you know there are people working on free energy physics.
I have to say scientists do basic things... they form a hypothesis, do the experiment, and then publish the findings. The findings are peer reviewed to check the methods and the material and then its ok for general use. Do you know how many scientists research has not been published. Its sitting on a computer or getting dusty because it didn't make it to journal? Do you know how hard it is to be a climatologist. Shoot physics doesn't always work in the ocean. We have to tweak our mathematical equations as depth increases.
One step at a time. #1 let the information out (don't hide ingenuity and good work), #2 learn what you can do in a feasible manner (I'm sure if they could install a meter on your lungs, they would tax you to breathe), #3 Learn to be more self-sufficient. Don't buy take out. Don't buy frozen dinners. Don't buy products foreign products unless absolutely necessary.. the extra energy in shipping is big. Don't buy white flour. Try to buy local veggies and fruits as much as possible. Support companies with "green" practices. There are list out there. Re-use your shopping bags at the store. Walk to the store if you can. Buy what you need and not what you want. Think how can I use what I know to be independent and efficient (this would be much easier with universal health care). It would revolutionize our ability to build progressive businesses. Do not buy Monsanto GMO foods or non-organic meets... these are huge energy wasters.
I am extremely passionate about the environment... its half of my degree. It odd that I get so much flack though I've been doing these things for many years before it became the newest "terror" alert.
