Dems: No-Confidence Vote in June
By Paul Kiel - May 24, 2007, 1:52 PM

In a press conference today, Sens. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) said that Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) had agreed to bring the no-confidence resolution concerning Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to the Senate floor after the immigration bill -- meaning probably the second week of June. The Senate has a one week recess next week.

The resolution itself is a brief one, simply expressing no confidence in Gonzales.

1. Because we have all the time in the world, right?
There are days I cannot handle the process.

2. "This calls for immediate discussion!"
It's like being forced to watch a film of a train wreck at one frame a day.

5. Oh, that's a good description.
The flaw of democracy is that it's so difficult to get anything done on the best days, let alone with a Congress stuffed with people who won in highly questionable ways, wholly against the will of the people. Why should they care what we want? Under tyranny, things can happen in a moment, with no discussion whatsoever...and some days that speed seems enviable.

9. I don't know. They sure passed the Patriot Act without much delay...
...(or without bothering to read it, in many cases). Congress can move fast when it wants to. Unfortunately, what they seem to want isn't to represent us, but to merely placate us until the next election while continuing to pursue a course laid by this administration which most Americans oppose almost four to one.

10. That wasn't democracy. That was tyranny.
One voice heard and counted. All others, silent and acquiescent. Many things happened speedily in the last six years. But none of it was democracy.

11. I can accept that.
That it's true, that is, not that it happened again.

7. It is the right move
It gives them time to shore up votes and the ratchet up the pressure on Republicans. As the vote looms near, a lot of Republicans will not relish either of the options: vote yes to show solidarity with a nitwit or vote no and risk retribution from Rove. The safe way out will be for Rove to throw Gonzales overboard.

It takes time for those dynamics to play out. Time works for us in this case.

4. What the hell is the delay? Cast the no-confidence vote and then move on.
It seems ridiculous to delay the Gonzales vote.

8. I'll believe it when it happens. When Dems exact blowback,
it usually turns out as blowcock.
