1. What were the powers-that-be at UMASS - Amherst thinking? What are
any of these nabobs at these universities thinks that invite a bush** admin member to speak, or to receive anything other than a swift kick in the ass?

9. They're thinking that they get many $$ millions from republicans to influence
which professors get hired & fired & what curriculum is "acceptable". There has been a deliberate movement in the past 25 years + for big corporations (and republican think tanks) to donate enough to colleges that they can influence what is permitted. They started doing this after the "Powell Manifesto" was issued in the '70's, to insure that THE TRUTH wasn't taught in college, and so riots on campuses (like what happened in the 60's & early 70's) don't happen again.

And since republicans keep influencing campus life, they figure they can get their people honored in whatever way they please.

59. Is it remotely possible Card was set up?
Inviting them to be commencement speakers may be one of the few ways to draw these * staffers out of isolation and give them a dose of reality. Almost like staging an intervention.

I would guess that he allowed it, at least. Poor bastard probably held his nose while he was doing it, knowing that they'd be defunded if he didn't.

On the other hand, maybe he's just a jerk.

There was a report out that the reason the military in Iraq was abruptly cut off from communication with the states was when cheney dropped in to Iraq he was booed by the troops. They had to be shut up. Right after that they cut off electronic communication. Wonder if it is true.

did he give up and go home? this video made me cry. i feel so proud right now. feel a tiny glimmer of hope.

upthread a poster discussed why the military just got gagged - my money says it is that cheney was booed. i think i'll try to get in touch with my MFSO advocate whose son is in iraq and ask her.

why should we have to lose 30,000 young men before we end this terrible illegal unjust war? opinion is on our side - we need to boo the administration out of their seats.

21. Brilliant. Note the people on stage, also booing and holding up signs.
They're faculty members and administrators, most likely. Good for them. But yes, what really feels great about this is the obvious outrage of the students (and parents) in attendance. Where I teach, in the midwest, the faculty are generally a good deal farther left than the student body, although not so much as we once were. The Republicans have been working hard (and it's HARD work) to earn their permanent minority status.

This is the America I remember! This is why we want our children to go to college - to develop critical thinking skills. I am as proud of every one of these young people as if he or she were my own child.

These graduates honored themselves today, as well as their parents and every person who contributed to their developing a social conscience and such morality and courage.

47. the jerk who invited Card should be slapped upside the head
But other than that, I think this is quite a memorable graduation. If I were on the faculty there, I would be proud of my fellow faculty members and most of all, the students. Is there anything more American than dissent? Think tea party.

I like to ask the question: "Fifty years from now, will it make a difference?" I think publicly dissing Card like this will.

For one, it shows what the response is likely to be when one of their ilk tries to pretend legitimacy.

What is disturbing, however, is loudsue's link, upthread. I'm sure she's right and I hope the story on how this ignorant lout was invited to participate in graduation comes out in the next day or so. I think I'll e-mail Joan Walsh to see if she'll do something on it.

The boos were deafening. The signs were huge and relentless. The "no Card" placards all over the grads left no doubt how the majority of them felt. This was nothing short of a complete embarrassment for Card and Bush's gang of war pimps.
