Sen. Ben Nelson Opposes Transferring Gitmo Detainees To U.S., Supports Bush Torture Techniques

This morning, Fox News Sunday hosted a debate on national security between Sen. John Kyl (R-AZ) and Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NE), but it turned out that the two senators agreed on most issues. Nelson declared that trials of Guantanamo detainees should not take place in the United States and detainees should not be imprisoned here. He distinguished between terrorists like the Blind Sheikh — who “committed violations of American law” — and those at Guantanamo to say the latter should be kept out of the U.S.:

NELSON: I think the tribunals can occur anywhere, and I prefer not to see them occur in America, within the continental United States. Once they’re convicted, I’m assuming they will be, then I think we need to work out with their countries an arrangement where they’re incarcerated there. <...>

But for those detainees who have violated the rules of war, we don’t have to worry about bringing them here. I think they need to be kept elsewhere, wherever that is. I don’t want to see them come on American soil.

Nelson also seemed to suggest that torture — or “enhanced techniques,” as he called it — could be used in the future:

NELSON: What we need to do is make sure that the intelligence information that’s gathered is accurate, that we do everything within our power to get good intelligence, and it may or may not consist of coming from enhanced techniques.

6. I find solace in the assurance...
...that politicians of Nelson's calibre are dying out. I hope that the election of Obama to the presidency was not just a fluke due to a bad economy, but rather that it marks the start of a new generation of Democratic politicians. Yes, I know he's getting heat for some of his decisions of late, and rightly so, but the type of dumb-as-a-fucking-rock gibberish coming from Nelson (and others like him) must become a thing of the past.

7. He may have a "D" after his name...but that's about it.

If I was keeping track, this old f*cker would be placed in the repuke column when it comes to having any sense of where this country needs to go in the future.

I realize he is a "midwest D", but it's time for the midwest to wake up and get these idiots out of Washington. They may as well be repukes....with their thoughtless comments and voting records.

9. Nebraska DUers, you might as well have a GOPer. He might even
be worse than McConnell/Bunning, and I didn't think that was possible. I haven't heard of their supporting torture. I admit that they may have (it wouldn't surprise me), and I just haven't heard it.

10. What the hell is wrong with the water in Nebraska?
We need to keep calling these pugs in pugs clothing out and shining a bright light on them or they will be the downfall of the Democratic party and what we stand for.

11. As a Nebraska DU'er, I am ashamed that Senator Nelson spoke
in favor torture. I worked many an hour on his re-election campaign. I never suspected he would stand up for torture...:grr:

I just shot off an e-mail asking him to renounce the practice of torture in all of it's various forms and to call it what it is...not "enhanced interogation techniques", but outright torture.

I urge DU'ers to send e-mails to him, as he took his view nationally. This is not a "Nebraskan issue", it is a national issue. Torture must be stopped and those that authorized and performed the inhuman acts must be held accountable.

And don't forget to send e-mails to your own Senators and House Members!

TURRIST= SUPERHUMANIGRACOMINTAGITCHOO!!!

NO ONE has ever escaped from a U.S. SUPERMAX prison.

The U.S. is NUMERO UNO in incarceration.

There are MANY UNOCCUPIED PRISONS in the U.S. Especially MO, the "Show Me State."

Was it Hardin, ND that has an EMPTY prison and offered to take 100 Gitmo detainees in an EMPTY 450 bed facility?

DO AMIS EVEN REALIZE THAT 95% OF THESE "DETAINEES" ARE GUILTY OF NOTHING MORE THAN BEING IN PROXIMITY OF U.S. TROOPS OCCUPYING THEIR LAND WHO WERE PASSING GREENS AROUND FOR BULLSHIT TO JUSTIFY BULLSHIT???

:argh:

Edited on Sun May-24-09 03:09 PM by GreenTea
Only Nelson has a "D" next to his name as if that demands any loyalty or concerns on Nelson's part, he's paid off well by business interest and couldn't care less about working people or the democratic party!

Nelson is from fucking Nebraska and just another fucking mid west red state, republican good old boy, masquerading as a Dem, to get elected and keeping tabs on the Dems for the republicans (ala Joe Lieberman).

Nelson should be thrown out of the democratic party the pile of pig shit!

that the word waterboarding will become an idiom referring to people who need to get a little payback back in kind for what they self-righteously inflict upon others.
