1. Wow. Every soldier basically knows they are being used once they get there.
This is so wrong.

We have to stop this.

Congress and the rich are profiting off of it. They aren't going to stop it.

We have to.

2. Fascinating.
Great to hear this account of the "GI Resistance." I don't know how effective this guy would be as a spokesperson, though, due to his self-admitted history of slinging drugs. Also, he sounds more real than the fraudulent "Jesse MacBeth," but his story should be vetted nonetheless.

4. Jesse is the first person I thought of -- I hope some of the military members
of DU drop by this thread and comment on how reasonable this story is. I am prepared to believe it - I already do - I don't want anyone duped by lies such that they are not willing to recognize the truth when they do see and hear it.

This is all so horrible...

3. lots of questionable charachters in the military
I knew lots of guys when I was in the service who sold drugs before they went in. There was also lots of drugs just around. This was during the late 1980s and early 1990s.

I had a platoon sergeant who before he got in busted knuckles for the mafia here in Dayton.

Ironically, he was also one of the lead snipers at the Lucasville prison riots.

9. no, that's what I got
from the "fascinating" comment. Just relaying a little bit of my experience. I think in no way does it discount his comments.

5. Most truth I've seen on DU for some time
Dude's got a point. If we gave a shit we'd help the soldiers get out of harms way on a one-by-one basis.

13. "The movement wouldn't even touch me because I was AWOL"
Does anyone else have experience of this? I was looking for info on Army war resisters and it's in short supply. It's obviously not easy getting in touch with guys who're effectively underground, but they've the story America needs to hear.

This guy's testimony sounds convincing enough to me. It reminded me of Haditha, the early checkpoint shootings and this:

Hersh talked about a call he had gotten from a first lieutenant in charge of a unit stationed halfway between Baghdad and the Syrian border. His group was bivouacking outside of town in an agricultural area, and had hired 30 or so Iraqis to guard a local granary. A few weeks passed. They got to know the men they hired, and to like them. Then orders came down from Baghdad that the village would be "cleared." Another platoon from the soldier's company came and executed the Iraqi granary guards. All of them.

"He said they just shot them one by one. And his people, and he, and the villagers of course, went nuts. He was hysterical, totally hysterical. He went to the company captain, who said, 'No, you don't understand, that's a kill. We got 36 insurgents. Don't you read those stories when the Americans say we had a combat maneuver and 15 insurgents were killed?'"

Support the troops who say No. This is what they're saying No to.

14. All that I can say is "Its about time"
I have been waiting for years now to hear a soldier talk about his experiences in Iraq and tell the truth without beating around the "bush"
