It's time for America, a nation of immigrants, to tell Joe the Plumber to fuck off

By Michael J.W. Stickings

Here's Samuel Wurzelbacher's latest invective of ignorance (at a right-wing tea party, no less):

I believe in making sure our country is safe first. I believe we need to spend a little more on illegal immigrants. Get them the hell out of our damn country and close the borders down. We can do it. We've got the greatest military in the world and you're telling me we can't close our borders? — That's just ridiculous.

Now, of course, America is a nation of immigrants, many of more of them illegal, in one way or another, than just the Mexicans who so trouble the nativist bigots of the right, Joe included. And, of course, many of the illegal ones from Mexico and elsewhere down south came to America for the same reason generations upon generations did before them: in search of hope, in search of a better life for themselves and their children.

If Joe wants "our damn country" to belong to his own kind, I'm sure there are more than a few native Americans who would tell him to get the hell out, too.

In fact, let's take up Joe's idea and run with it: Let's turn America into a military-police state with a wall around it. Let's target the Other, anyone who doesn't look right, anyone who might be a little too brown for Joe's liking. It's fascism, sure, but that's what he seems to want. (Notice that he equates illegal immigrants with terrorists. Making America "safe," it seems, requires targeting Mexicans.)

Mass deportation? Hey, why not?

Well, my American friends, why don't you start with the Wurzelbachers themselves? ...

Not a criticism of the OP or the thread, but why do we keep talking about him in public? We stopped talking about Jeff Gannon, who makes a lot more sense than this idiot.

Beats honest work, I suppose.

Three generations ago the Nativists used the very same arguments against people like Samuel's great-grandparents, in order to keep out cheap immigrant labor.

Wonder if he ever thought of that.

When I was younger and went out to the nightclubs, there is always one of these dicks at every one and everyone hated them but are too afraid to say so to their face. Except me. Then they would hit on me because I was just playing "hard to get". Dumb as a box of rocks. Most of them drank themselves to death. So if you see Joe the Dumber, buy him a beer.

18. I don't mean to sound like I agree with Joe the freakin plumber,
but...

What is the solution? Alot of people are pretty pissed about what they view as an invasion. They see their public areas being tagged by gangs, their jobs being lost because of low-cost union busting laborers, their hospitals either closing down, running on deficits, or charging more to paying patients to cover the indigent. Our emergency rooms are packed every hour of the day. Pregnant women with no insurance and no citizenship and hence, no prenatal care are showing up at the last minute in labor.

Don't get me wrong. This is not an ethinic issue or an elitist issue. The problem is that the USA is not a bottomless well of money and prosperity. There are people all over the world that would love to come here for a better life. We all want a better life; US citizens included. It's not fair to other nationalities that they can't just walk on over or come here as easily on a work visa that they allow to expire.

I'd sure like to see a progressive solution from someone smarter than me. I know it's complicated but that's just the kind of problem we hope our elected officials can tackle and resolve. I'm prety sure we have immigration laws for a good reason. To simply look the other way and let it happen seems cowardly and unjust. So what do we do?

What's the problem?

Is illegal immigration up significantly lately? ILLEGAL immigration, not immigration. I mean, I don't know.

Y'know....if there wasn't anyone hiring illegals (and those who did got punished so that the hiring was just not worth it)there'd be little reason to come here illegally. How about cracking down on the employers?

I do know that closing up our borders is as impractical a dream as flat or no taxes.

When are these fools gonna deal with reality?

22. Yeah I don't agree with the Plumber when it comes to his poice state solution.
It seems like cracking down on employers would be a pretty big job too. There's alot of it. Maybe we could do something about overpopulation in poor countries or maybe address the poverty itself. I know we spend bookoos of dollars on defense here. Maybe some of that could be used to help people in other countries and give the fewer reasons to come here undocumented.

24. The only union busting I see going on is from Big Corporations and the assholes that work for them
Right now, as we speak, Linda Lingle is illegally trying to bust Unions in Hawaii. Twice the Supreme Court has smacked her down for skirting the law, but she is continuing with a vengeance. Now, add a frantic panic stricken, rabid dog, rovian media machine that is present in Hawaii, and the Unions are under staggering attack.

Illegal Immigrant are not stealing jobs, they are doing jobs that no sane American would subject themselves to in order to chase the fraudulent American dream.

You should try and put yourselves in their shoes and get a taste for what they go through, because at the root of the matter you are no different for them. You are made of the same material, function the same way, and feel pain and suffer identically. They are not widgets or intruders, but the same family of life as you.

This Bullshit about the USA not being a bottomless well of money. Explain the military, with is ever increasing pricetag, paid for with money conjured out of thin air. What about the war on Drugs, which ensares 90% of Americans with the threat of criminality, and finances huge programs of corporate warfare, weaponry and interdiction. The Corporation depend on illegals, and they even go so far as to sacrifice a manageble number to Immigration officers, but not too many to interfere with production.

No, it's not because we have a better life up here, it's because they are purposefully neglected and abused down there. The system of humanity is broken, and trying to foist responsibility on those least capable to handle that responsibility is a cop out, and a myth.

I guess you've never traveled south of the border have you? America just wasted 3 trillion dollars on an uneccessary war in Iraq, and we can't even help our direct neighbor to the south, other that opening up the floodgates to exploitation by American Corporations through NAFTA.

The republicans and the Government in general have painted themselves into a corner on the whole immigration issue. You are buying onto the shallow story created for the benefit of hate and fear, and regurgitated over and over again by talking shitheads like Joe the Asshole.

Edited on Wed Jul-08-09 11:41 AM by DUlover2909
I totally agree with you that it's the employers and corporations are the real culprits. Don't attack me. I'm on your side. I agree whole-heartedly that the defense budget is insane and the wars were not necessary. I have been south of the border many times. I have worked alongside undocumented workers doing the very jobs you say Americans won't do. I can speak Spanish and I don't hate them at all. I was trying to get a solution to the Joe the Plumber attitude and how to fix it.

38. That is still non-responsive data
Edited on Wed Jul-08-09 01:03 PM by jberryhill
Two questions:

1. Your sister is checking citizenship status of patients? How?

2. "Non citizen" does not mean "illegal immigrant". There are millions of non-citizens legally residing in the US. How is an ER nurse assessing resident status of her non-citizen patients?

I've never been asked at a hospital whether or not I am a citizen, legal resident non-citizen, or illegal resident non-citizen. I'm fascinated by the notion that patients are showing up at the hospital and identifying themselves as non-legal resident non-citizens. How does that work?

Your definition of "indigent" as "no insurance / homeless" is interesting. I spent two years without health insurance while making six figures a year. (try getting health insurance after paying for a physical that turns up high cholesterol). What method is your sister using for determining the patients she treats are not paying their bills, as I did without insurance? I'm not aware of any hospital where nurses work in the billing department.

Or by "non citizen" does your sister mean "people who speak Spanish", when she really has no clue what their status might be, or whether they pay their bill?

39. Maybe she's wrong. I don't have any data. I was relating the perception.
She was telling me what the people that run the hospital say. They are run by a board of people that apparently think illegal immigrants are jamming up the ER. This they say is why they depend on philanthropy to support the hospital because state funds aren't enough to keep the doors open. That's the information that they are providing for their annual losses.

I'm not an expert in any of these matters. I was trying to get a conversation going about what can be done about the public perception of the problem that Joe the Plumber was clumsily describing.

I understand the questions you are asking. I have the same questions. To look the other way however isn't productive. Eventually the donations might not be there. There are a whole lot of people that think like Joe the Plumber and there's got to be a reason for it. Maybe the reason is ignorance. My use of the word indigent comes from how the hospital defines them. These are patients that do not have insurance and can not pay for the services.

Personally, I'd like to see universal coverage for everyone that comes into any doctor or clinic paid for by the government. That only addresses the healthcare side of the immigration debate.

40. To be clear....
Edited on Wed Jul-08-09 02:30 PM by jberryhill
The people that run the hospital do not know the immigration status of the people that visit it, since that information is not collected by the hospital, and nobody says "oh, yeah, I'm here illegally" when asked.

There is no way to determine the citizenship status of the patients. Period.

The people that run the hospital see a bunch of hispanic sounding names, and are making an uninformed statement. People with hispanic names have been living in Texas longer than people with anglo names, but English-speaking immigrants to Texas never bothered to learn the predominant language.

To look the other way however isn't productive.

Uninformed non-data is not productive.

There are a whole lot of people that think like Joe the Plumber

I don't believe that either.

But if you have data defining a "problem" then one might talk about how to "solve" the "problem".

What you have proposed is not a "problem". You have proposed a line of inquiry to find data to determine whether there IS one.

This reminds me of Sarah Palin explaining how we are going to address global warming without "arguing over what causes it". Ummmm... it don't work that way, hon.

regarding public sentiments about immigration issues. For that reason I have decided to drop it since it doesn't seem like it's worth persuing any further. Like I said, I am not an expert. We happen to disagree about how many people agree with Joe the Plumber. It might depend on in what part of the country each of us are living.
