Summary: Cenk went on Dylan Ratigan's new MSNBC morning show as a representative of New Media to discuss if the world is growing more violent (see protests in Iran, China, etc.) or if it just seems that way because we can see it with new technology. The 'traditional media' journalist Tom Aspell thinks people are getting more violent faster because they know they're on camera and they want people to see it and help them. Cenk thinks that's absurd and he explains why. They also discuss North Korea and how they have no tech. infrastructure.

2. Except for how it annoyingly cuts off at the end.
And how they spelled Cenk's name as "Cent" at one point.

Up until then it's spelled correctly at the bottom, but then they try that fancy pop-up bio.

21. Amen, but not Ratigan's slot.
It's too early in the morning for the West Coast. Granted, Cenk would probably move.

7. Tom Aspell clearly lives in a fantasy world.
A fantasy world where violence isn't real. People who live in the reality-based community are aware that engaging in violent protest is fucking dangerous, and if they're engaging in violent protest, it's either because (a) their govt is the one that incited the violence or (b) they consider their cause important enough to risk life and limb.

In no respect are real people dumb enough to stage a dangerous violent protest because they think the fucking optics will be favorable.

8. Several good points on Cenk's part when responding to
people who want to participate in the process that their Governments are creating regardless if there are media available. The other respondent, Tom, is aware of another agenda that seems to belie the people's plight.

15. Ya know, just as I "thought" MSNBC" (formerly known as MS"GOP")......
was getting more liberal with Olberman and Maddow, they give this dickwad his own show. I say kick this "cunt" off the air and fill the slot with Cenk.

16. Loved seeing Cenk on MSN!
He handles himself so much better than most commentators and he explained the difference between N. Korea and Iran's technology infrastructure very well. He should really have his own show. I doubt he would devote so much time to such a spurious subject as "are people protesting just to be seen on camera?" Maybe that would happen here, ala "Jackass", but our media has no business diminishing the right to protest of any population under duress. I'm sure the Iranian dictatorship calls their protesters troublemakers (or worse) and there is no reason our media should fall in line with that way of thinking. K&R! :kick:

20. Good vid. Cenk was very substantive.
Excellent diarist at Kos too, if anyone's missed that. Damn, the guy's smart and well-informed. MSNBC really ought to throw him some bucks and at least have him as a frequent discussant and give TYT a couple hours on Saturdays and Sundays. I really don't think many would miss the prison porn.

23. By my count Aspell used the word violent or violence 11 times, he also
got the lion's share of the time during that segment, he never seemed to focus on the repressive governments as a contributing factor, the legitimate aspirations of the people or the peaceful protesters.

I believe Aspell only sees advanced communications technology as a means of instigation and not the expansive liberating tool; empowering the peoples' Freedom of Thought and Speech.

Thanks for the thread, ihavenobias.

24. Good point
This didn't come across to me as a titanic clash of views, but I think you nailed it. Even though the two weren't screaming at one another, there was actually a huge gap between their views. One was saying that people are naturally looking for violence and when they have a chance to do that on camera, that just makes the great unwashed all the more unruly. The other was saying that the protests never set out to be violent. It is not a strategy to hold "a violent protest". The violence only happens when the protesters don't back down and the government then starts cracking heads.
