In case you haven't heard, Coal to Liquid Technologyis being proposed by a bill in the Senate, introduced by Senators Barack Obama (D-IL) and Jim Bunning (R-KY). Problem is it would DOUBLE carbon emissions by the vehicles using it. We need to fight global warming, not increase it.

MoveOn is collecting petition signatures against this bill.

So is Chesapeake Climate Action Network

Who among the declare Democratic candidates is ready to lead on global warming?

1. This bill makes me really angry.
I signed and wrote a comment. We are at a crossroads now for planning for long term energy uses. Why waste money on something that will make the environment dirtier? We can be independent from ME oil AND clean. Wind, solar and/or biomass would be far preferable. Why lock us in to a 25 year expensive commitment that would preempt better technology, especially without a thorough debate?

Using federal legislation for the sole purpose of bringing money to your district is bad enough when it just wastes money. This wastes far more than money! NOW is the time to go in the direction of clean energy. We can't waste this opportunity. We may not get another one.

I would also like to know why it takes MoveOn to get the word out on this legislation. Where the heck is MSM? This is their job - to help us keep an eye on what is happening in our Congress.

Kudos to John Edwards for being strong in fighting global warming.

2. Obama is acting as a senator on this
Edited on Fri Jun-08-07 09:36 PM by benny05
I don't blame him, but I get frustrated with anyone who says Obama is OK on this issue unless they forgive Edwards on the war vote.

If they don't, so be it, but this is a war on our planet's infrastructure otherwise. And Obama will have to say, I'm a senator first, but a presidential candidate second.

4. Very Informative Post. Thanks!
Illinois is the second largest state in the amount of coal mined. I guess Senator Obama was under a lot of pressure from the big mining companies.

The comparison chart in the "ready to lead on global warming" link really tells the story. I'm proud of John Edwards stand on the issue of global warming. This is too important an issue to cave in on, even if it is hard to stand up to some of the big companies. Yes, I'm proud of John Edwards for standing up! He shows the kind of leadership we need in our next president.

10. Coal to liquid results in much more CO2 than regular coal; but less particulates and other pollution
Except for CO2, its a way to use the energy content of coal with less environmental impacts.

The Florida Solar Energy Center has a process for removing carbon from coal, with a resulting mostly hydrogen fuel.
This is likely the best and most environmentally reasonable method to use coal. The carbon has a market such as for carbon black or carbon filaments for car or plane bodies, so offsets some of the lost energy when carbon is removed.

what is the primary ingredient of the liquid coal fuel- methanol?
what is the formula?
