2. Here are the updated lyrics for the early 21st century
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
And yes, my band plays this version of the song:

Come on all of you big strong men
Uncle Sam needs your help again
he's getting himself in a terrible jam
way over yonder in Iran so
put down your beers and pick up a gun we're
gonna have a whole lotta fun

(CHORUS)
And it's one, two, three, what are we fighting for
don't ask me I don't give a damn, next stop gonna be Iran
And it's five, six, seven, open up the pearly gates
Well... there ain't no time to wonder why, whoopee we're all gonna die

Come on Christian Soldiers, better move fast
your big chance has come at last
now you can go and shoot Haji in the head
cos the only good heathen is one that's dead and
you know that peace can only be won when we've
blown 'em all to kingdom come

Chorus

Come on Halliburton don't be slow
Hey Carlyle, the war's a go!
there's plenty good money to be made by
"supplying" the army with the tools of trade
let's hope and pray that if they drop the bomb,
they drop it on old Tehran

Chorus

Come on mothers throughout the land
pack your boys off to Iran
come on fathers don't hesitate
send your daughters off before it's too late
and you can be the first ones on your block
to have your kid come home in a box

Chorus

All right!

4. That's a bit old. Last I heard, we were sending free trade agreements over there.

5. Great experience with the song recently...
My husband and I were having supper at a nice small seafood restaurant in the homeport town of Ingleside, TX on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. It's where I grew up and Homeport (via Phil Graham) changed this town from conservative to ultra-military conservative. An older gentleman was quietly playing his guitar and singing folk songs in what I call the Jim Croce and Gordon Lightfoot style. We were getting ready to leave when he starting playing this song. I plopped back down in my seat. I couldn't believe my ears. The place was full. I sat through the song and listened and watched the people. They did not have a CLUE. As he finished the song, we walked past where he was singing and I flashed him the peace sign. He smiled in acknowledgment. I wish I had had the time to wait until close and speak with him. A man with a message in a town so secure in their thoughts about this nation that they were totally oblivious to what was happening, even in the moment and right in their sight. I thought this represented well the sheeple that are all around us.

And this song even sounds great in the Croce and Lightfoot style.

That guitarist should try the "updated version" in the thread above - maybe those restaurant patrons' ears would pick up on the message.

Peace.

7. I wish all entertainers had the guts to keep playing this song
the irony is not lost on our young folks, unfortunately there are many in their late 20s and 30s who are following along with the bush-cheney groupthink.
