2. Tech's talented, but he's a homophobe and his lyrics betray a lot of violence toward women, |
|
One one hand he's fighting oppression through his art, and on the other he's working to keep others oppressed. It's sad because he has a lot of potential as an artist, and he wastes it on hatred and conspiratorial bullshit ("Bush brought down the towers") because his talent exceeds his political understanding.
I don't think we need to give him any attention as long as his lyrics provide a forum for hate.

4. He has other songs. The one about a guy gang raping his own mother is especially charming. |

yes, I agree the songs are very graphic, but it sounds like he is saying -think before you 'dance with the devil' that person you are hurting could be your mom. He is not advocating it. I do, however respect your opinion. And am in no way trying to be confrontational.

6. Also, I really only listen to his 3rd World album. |
|
I also think he is in the LIHOP crew when it comes to the 'towers'.

7. These lyrics are if anything anti-homphobic |
|
The artist is engaging the traditional hiphop steretypes and putting a pretty hard political bend to the genre. He is describing a subculture that is homophobic and does denigrate women, but he is actually using the description to attack the underlying philosophy (at least in "obnoxius")
In general your initial suggestion that progressive movement should not provide a forum for this work, which is relevant and congruous with the movement objectives due to some other work the artist has done is somewhat problematic, in at least this approach refuses to judge a piece on its induvidual merits. On top of that, in this particular case, the assertion that the artist is homophobic and chauvinist is actually misguided...
