There are many videos on YouTube celebrating the achievement of landing two people on the moon on July 20th, 1969.

I picked this one out because it brings together all the key moments without going over 5 minutes.

I was just a baby at the time - only 5 months old. But I remember reading all about it as a young boy.

My generation was obsessed with the idea space travel. I was 8 years old when "STAR WARS" came out.

The Apollo programme shows what "big government" can achieve when there is sufficient political will.

I guess it could only have happened in the context of the Cold War and the wish to beat the Russians.

It did cost a lot of money. On the other hand - it created a lot of good jobs and technological advances.

I find it inspiring that America rose to the challenge of JFK's vision, even after his assassination.

Let's hope that America will rise to the challenge of the vision offered to us by President Obama.

YES WE CAN!

Please post your thoughts and reflections on the historical significance of Apollo 11 ...

2. My anniversary's tomorrow,,and my Dad worked on this flight.
We lost him last year. He designed the trajectory, or flight path, for John Glenn's flight (the first man in space) and other space flights up through the early Apollo missions.

America was so full of hope when man landed on the moon - we felt we could accomplish anything if we just set our minds to it.

3. I worked for NASA for over 10 years (all of the ninties)...
And I often worked into the night time.

Every time I walked the front door of my building, I faced the intake of the world's largest wind tunnel.

And I would look up at the moon and would think to myself "Damn, I work for the organization that sent people there!" and I often would add "Damn, I sure wish we were doing something even more amazing".

But I always looked up at the moon overhead.

Here is a playlist that plays all 10 parts: www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=2E00EEA7422BFE8C

Worth 100 minutes of your time on this anniversary day! B-)

Or if you don't have 100 minutes - skip ahead to part 4 at around 3:30 onwards ...

Or if you only have 10 minutes - just watch part 7: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVvlMGazgZw

It starts with Buzz Aldrin talking about the descent to the surface of the moon ...

7. I lived through the entire Apollo program.
I was 13 at the time of Apollo 11. I was fascinated by the space program most of my childhood.

In the 80s I worked at GE on a team writing code for a satellite ground station that was used to relay, among other things, communications from the shuttle and various space probes. For all I know that code is still running.

10. "There was a great feeling of elation" -- Neil Armstrong
This video is the best report of Neil and Buzz walking on the moon.

NASA: Triumph and Tragedy - Episode One (part 6 of 6)
www.youtube.com/watch?v=nH8JH0uWqPE

Watch it from the start, and Neil Armstrong will speak at around 2:36
