1. I believe the powers-that-be have made it very clear:
- they do not like the "unwashed" masses, and will gleefully turn the screws at every opportunity.

If they do not do this consciously, they do it unconsciously. Either way is craven, IMO.

2. The politically powerful hurt us in order to become more powerful.

The more power they have over us, the less power we have to fight them back.

4. What's motive got to do with it?
Misery and death are what they are regardless of why they are inflicted.

6. I don't completely agree with this - I think intention is important-it
may not alter the outcome, but it does matter. Otherwise, why argue about hate crimes - isn't that the same thing? And I do think that hate crimes are different.

5. Greedy, self-righteous, out-of-touch and, may I add, very, very afraid.
That is why leaders take control and exploit ordinary people. This young man asks a very good question. The answers are in the history books. He needs to read about Hitler and Stalin, about Pol Pot, about the inquisition, about the Star Chamber, about the Roman Empire and the writings of men like Jefferson, Adams, Madison and Thomas Paine and the Magna Carta.

He will soon realize that history is full of instances where the strong and mighty took control and made the lives of ordinary people as miserable as they possibly could. No, it does not make sense to us, but it is what these people do. And George W. Bush was on his way to becoming that kind of leader. We were rescued from his designs and fears by our Constitution and its term limits. It could happen again. Unnecessary wars are commonly begun by the kinds of people who harm their own constituents on purpose. And George W. Bush started a totally unnecessary war in Iraq -- by lying to us.
