and I was glad she referenced Buchanan's 1971 memo wherein he advocated affirmative action for Catholic "ethnics." "Ethnics" in Republican jargon from Nixon to Reagan referred to whites who weren't WASPs, who maintained a significant ethnic identity as Italian- Irish- Polish- Greek - or other -American, were largely though not always Catholic, and appeared ripe for the picking from Democrats, to whom their loyalty was weakening. Damn, Buchanan is the ultimate tribalist; it's always "us or them" with that dude; he can't wrap his head around a cheerful vision of "all of us together."

3. With understanding to Gov. Rendell...

...that he can't just come out and say what really drives the Blue Dogs, I think it should be stressed that they are not concerned with an exploding deficit. If we hadn't gone into this useless war, that many of them supported, financing health care would not be a problem today. They don't give a flying fuck about deficits. They are bought and paid for by their corporate masters and serve only them, not the people. This should be said more often in public. Make this scum sweat until they change. Or throw their worthless asses out when they do not comply.

7. Not in the long term but it will cost something to implement and that will add to the deficit.

Once implemented, it will be revenue neutral and eventually lead to a surplus. It is just the getting there that is the problem...
