6. The truth from this speaker fills me with both hope and despair. |
|
How is it that the "most powerful nation on earth" gets so many things absolutely dead wrong?
Health care. Drug war. Preemptive invasion. Campaign financing.
And all of these failed and idiotic policies have huge negative consequences -- as the speaker pointed out -- across every racial and ethnic line.
And.we.keep.doing.it.
I think America has always suffered, and continues to suffer from its founding by religious prigs who would rather condemn a person to hellfire on earth rather than risk compromising that person's (totally imaginary) "immortal soul." All of these issues arise from crackbrained positions of moral superiority, and most of that superiority descends from some twisted form of Christianity.
I'm not a religious person, so as a matter of policy I consider all religions equally fraudulent (although Scientology, of course, is so beyond the pale it's breathtaking), but the damage done to the people of America by the twisting of Christian principles is a tragedy that plays out every single day.

9. I mean putting money and the acquisition of it above all else. |

I'd say that's the root cause of nearly all of our problems as a country. Perhaps the old adage is true and money really is the root of all evil. If more people cared about the well-being of their fellow citizen half as much as they cared about the almighty dollar, this country would be a different place.
On edit: But I do realize it's not the *only* problem, I just think it's the biggest.

10. At the higher end of the achievement/inheritance scale, maybe so . . . |
|
But for the battlers in the trenches, IMO, it comes down to "morality." Some mutated form of Calvinism where no one is actually worthy of the gifts they receive unless they abase themselves before some psychopathic sky creature. And since these same battlers are themselves abased, they're ready to pass that on to the rest of humanity.
