The 1972 election was the last time a large chunk of delegates were chosen by the party leaders instead of in primaries and cauci.
Also, Hubert Humphrey is one of the people who had the most serious runs for president, Harold Stassen's 12 runs notwithstanding. Humphrey ran in 1960, 1968, 1972 and 1976.
Had Humphrey gotten renominated in 1968, could he have defeated Nixon? Had Nixon been defeated, he wouldn't have had the leverage necessary to wiggle out a pardon. As a result, he might have gone to jail and there would be more faith in politics today.
No Nixon = No Ford and No Carter. No Carter = No Reagan. The wingnuts might have never become the force they became without Reagan.
How one election can change EVERYTHING!
