Edited on Fri Jul-24-09 09:23 PM by gtar100
for the the assholes that they are. Perry looks like the typical American media hero. But he's all about making himself and his circle of friends rich and walking all over everyone else to do it.

Yea, Rachel, your frustration is understandable. They're hypocrites. And that's just the nice way of saying it.

5. CaptionTube: Sophisticated Caption Editing for YouTube Videos
Last August YouTube enabled users to upload closed caption files for video captions, but today they’re trying to make it even easier for you to reach those viewers who are either hearing impaired or unable to understand your audio.

YouTube’s new caption feature, CaptionTube, now allows for adding captions via a sophisticated video caption editor, so users can add their text transcriptions side by side with the video in question.

Acknowledging the limitations prior to CaptionTube, the YouTube blog admits, “We recognize, however, that the process of adding closed captions to your video — uploading a text file — leaves a bit to be desired, even though we support a wide range of formats from various captioning service and software.”

Edited on Fri Jul-24-09 11:11 PM by tblue37
closed captioning for TV has changed my life!

On edit--It appears that the person uploading the video will have to decide to include captions, and since I am sure most won't bother, I don't think it is going to help people like me much.

Sigh. You don't know how frustrating it is that we can't even get a summary of such videos as this one, much less enjoy their actual words.

but typing on this thing is really hard to get used to.

I did a quick search and found that msnbc does provide transcripts, but they are 24 hrs behind....

13. Amen! I'm also hearing-impaired and am getting
extremely frustrated with this, particularly after its been brought to the attention of DUers several times as to how frustrating it is and that they should at least add a brief summary to video postings. Most still don't bother to do it.

And as for the YouTube captioning-good luck with that one. Most posters aren't gonna bother with it at all. In fact, unless they have a friend or family member who's hearing-impaired or they are themselves, they're likely not even gonna think about it at all. Most people who don't have to deal with it don't even think about it. It's understandable, but very frustrating.

40. lh, about a month or so ago I posted a request in GD that people
Edited on Sat Jul-25-09 02:38 PM by tblue37
include brief summaries for those of us who are hearing impaired. It was so well-received that it got 173 recomends and ended up as the top post on the Greatest page that day. Several people with normal hearing also said that they were at work or on slow dial-ups, or that they just didn't want to click a vid without knowing that it would be worth their time.

With such a positive reaction, I thought maybe it would make people more considerate about this issue.

But it didn't, obviously, except in a few cases.

I have not used the Unrec button on any post yet, but I am tempted to start doing it to those that won't post a summary, even after I have asked for one (as I asked here in this thread). I would always ask first and not Unrec unless my request was ignored, but I really think I might start doing that.

BTW, notice that although GivePeaceaChance was kind enough to post a transcript for us, the OP never did bother to.

Another BTW--you might like to visit my I'm Listening as Hard as I Can! website:
http://www.deafnotdumb.homestead.com/index,html
There I post my articles about coping with hearing impairment in a society where people are at best inconsiderate and thoughtless, and at worst downright nasty about our inability to understand without some accommodation. My pieces are mostly (though not all) humorous. Many deaf/HoH readers tell me they print my articles out or else give my URL to hearies they know or work with, so the hearies will have some understanding of what they are putting us through.

Yet another BTW: I have often pointed out that if we were blind, people would not push furniture in front of us as we try to walk around, and if we were crippled, they would not knock our canes or walkers out from beneath us as we walk, but since hearing loss is "invisible," people don't take it seriously, and often they don't even believe we can't hear. (I am sure you have hear the old "You ehar exactly what you want to hear!" insult.) They think we are just not paying attention, or that we are just ignoring them for our own selfish reasons.

27. TRANSCRIPT
Edited on Sat Jul-25-09 11:27 AM by GivePeaceAchance
A FL doctor active in the Obama tea party movement, has apologized and has pledged to stop participating in conservative health care reform efforts. When he was caught circulating a photo shopped picture of Obama that portrayed President Obama as an African witch doctor with a bone through his nose. The photo that we will not show so that you will not have to beach your eyeballs after. The photo caption the words 'Obama Care' with the 'c' formed into a hammer and sickle. You get it! He's an African witch doctor with a bone through his nose because he is black, like real black!*sarcasm* And also he's a soviet communist at the same time! *ditto* It's very subtle and very complicated. As is a lot of the expressed opposition to reforming healthcare. Even by people who supposed to be tea party Kooks, and folks holding signs on street corners. *cuts to clip* A question from a voter: Does Barack's healthcare plan mean socialism? Michael Steele: Yes! Next question. *end of clip*
You see he's very sure about that, so he can move right on. He's very sure, that reforming healthcare is socialism even if he isn't very sure what policy is. *start of next clip*Steele: I don't do policy, I'm not a legislator.*end of clip*
Don't let that stop you talking about it anyway. The opposition to healthcare isn't the most cogent thing in the world. The GOP solutions group in congress, you will recall admitted, that iT was better if they, didn't offer any health care solutions. They would just rather keep saying 'no' to whatever it the Democrats have to offer no matter what it is. In the rollicking festival of incoherence, there is one man determined to be the most incoherent of all. Little known outside his home state, for having beautiful hair and threatening to secede from the union back in April. Gov. Perry is now threatening that Texas will also secede from healthcare! I told you it was incoherent. Speaking with a talk show host, on WBAP in Arlington TX, Gov. Perry had this to say about what he wants to secede from next.

*start of clip* GP: it really is a state issue, and if there was ever an argument for the 10th amendment and letting states find their solutions, to their problem. This maybe at the top of the class.*end of clip*

You know who feels he is at the top of his class? A guy who brags about that healthcare is really one of those issues, where states need to find their own solutions. When he is the Governor of the state, that has more uninsured people than, the entire, country. One in four Texans doesn't have insurance, Governor Rick! Healthcare ridges 10 points less, than it is the rest of the country. Governor Rick, you've been governor for 9 years there. How you doing finding a solution for Texans healthcare problems, there Governor??? You've got the most expensive healthcare markets in the country,, and,, the least number of people insured, and you're worried the federal government is going to mess up the good thing you have going in TX?? You need to protect Texas' healthcare system, that you feel you're doing such and awesome job with. From the people you think might really mess it up?? Let the states find the own solution???? You've had 9 years governor! You're the worst in the country how you doing with that ?? Sorry, I almost never do that,, almost, never do that. Come on! Sorry *cough*

Edited on Sat Jul-25-09 12:53 PM by TheEuclideanOne
I was discussing healthcare with a total Rightwingnut(not from Texas) the other day and he was so sure that the US healthcare system is the best in the world that we would be totally destroying our perfect healthcare system if we switched to "socialized medicine".

So we played the "Let's take an example" game. My example was "Let's say that he ate a sandwich and came down with a tapeworm, went to his doctor and was told that he needed an expensive operation". As a sidenote, in seeing where I was going, he kept desperately trying to change the subject, but I managed to keep him on topic. When we got to the point where the insurance company refused to pay for his operation, I asked him what he would do. He said, that he would simply go to another doctor. So, I asked him how he would pay for this expensive operation. His answer was simply that he would be "responsible". Well, I saw his house of cards crumbling pretty quickly because I knew what he meant by being "responsible". He thought for a moment that it would somehow be the end of discussion. (After all, being "responsible" sounds like a good thing.) Wrong. So after having him define what "being responsible" meant, it meant he would just pay it out of pocket. Now, I knew that he was not a millionaire, so I pointed out that it could only mean one of two things, either go bankrupt or die because he could not pay for the operation. I pointed this out and his response was "Well, no system is perfect". So, I had to point out to him that the system that he was fighting so hard for would provide a level of healthcare for him that would lead inevitably to his death or bankruptcy. Yet, he stood behind his argument. Is that scary or what?!?!? He even admitted that he was aware that it would lead to death or bankdruptcy. Somebody who believes so strongly in a system that has an outcome of only death or bankruptcy, especially when they know it, is drinking alot of Koolaid. There are alot of folks in the GOP with the exact same mindset. Sadly, it goes way beyond Texas.

The conversation finally broke down when I pointed out to him that the reason that he hears only negative stories about healthcare is that he gets all of his information from Hannity, Levin, Beck and Rush, all of which just pass on the propaganda. He ended up storming off because he really hates when I bring up that point.

On a related note, he is also a birther.

Governor Rick should pull a Palin and say he can help Texas more by stepping down.

BTW, if the tea-baggers did have any good point at all, cloaking it in obvious personal dislike of Obama (due to race, party or whatever) keeps it from reaching through.

Pushed through a medical reform limiting the amount a Dr would be liable for killing someone accidentally. This was supposedly to lower malpractice insurance costs and save us all money. Of course it didn't work because that's not the problem. He also said once while anouncing cuts in medical funding that his opponents were going to argue that these cuts would kill poeple. He didn't argue that it wouldn't, he just accepted it and moved on. Major asshole.
