Murfreesboro, Tennessee - Friday, July 24, 2009 By a 10 - 1 margin, union and health care activists rally in front of the Murfreesboro office of Congressman Bart Gordon (D-Tn.) confronting area members of the "tea bag" movement. Union and health care activists were there in support of President Obama's health care reform efforts. The "tea baggers" were basically calling for continuation of the status quo. Those supporting the President's reforms numbered in excess of 100 individuals from across the area while the "tea baggers" had approximately 10+ persons present.
Those supporting health care reform were a cross section of the community. Labor was represented by members from CWA Local 3808, IBEW Local 429, OPIU Local 182, SEIU Local 205, USW Local 1055, and USW Staff. Also from labor were representatives of the Tennessee AFL/CIO and the Nashville-Middle Tennessee Central Labor Council. Others that were there were Health Care for America NOW, Murfreesboro Community Organizers, Tennessee Alliance for Progress, and Tennessee Health Care Campaign. There was a mix of community activists in attendance. Category: Nonprofits & Activism
